The editorials were really rolling in this week, but other than that, not much happened. I know I promised an extra newsletter this week, and that obviously never happened. Getting sick really threw off my schedule, and I forgot how busy I was going to be this last week of August/ first week of September. You’ll get her eventually.
Anyway, let’s get into things.
- Addison Rae for Vogue; It’s always been very interesting to me to see how we absorb someone’s existence and choices, depending on where they fall in our good graces. I have always said Addison Rae has It-Girl potential, and I still stand by that. This past week, Addison released an EP of songs that didn’t exactly come out the way she planned for them to, and they were accompanied by this vogue editorial. I remember when the absolute banger that is ‘Obsessed’ originally came out, and it did not get all the love that it and its friends are getting now. Same goes for Addison’s fashion choices, which I thought were brilliantly Y2K popstar princess, and continue to be. Lest we not forgot her being styled by Ryan Hastings and serving us some scrumtious archival looks. Sure, this editorial isn’t mouth watering in terms of styling, but it’s cheeky, it’s on the nose, and I think it’s very self-aware. I also feel like the Gucci by Tom Ford moment is a callback to her Met Gala look, that received so much hate. Styled by Devon Lee Carlson.
- Devon Aoki for Vogue; If Devon is involved, I will be paying attention. This editorial focused on Vivienne Westwood and her influence on fashion, which is why it was shot in Tokyo— a city that has long championed her work. I love that not all the pieces are Westwood, but are still styled in a way that feels Westwood. Including Marc Jacobs pieces was touching, given that he dedicated a collection to her after her passing, and has always spoken on how big of an influence she was to him. The Chanel look Devon wears was recently worn by Sofia Richie-Grainge for her Town & Country editorial. You might recall me calling it scary… because it was, however here, I’m sold! Leave it to Gabriella Karefa-Johnson to make me like a piece I never thought I could. The reason I think it works, is because it’s fucking weird and makes no sense, so styling it with a bit of edge allows it to be weird. Whereas for Sofia, they were trying to give it a ladies who lunch moment, and that’s just not its journey. Styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson.
- Zendaya for Elle; Those nepo baby models are so lucky Zendaya decided to pursue acting, because the way she consistently serves is embarrassing for them. My one complaint is that, that Dundas gown really should have been the cover shot. It’s giving bumster without the crack, and just looks like a huge g-string for her back— I love. Wait, just kidding, one more complaint. I love this editorial, but given that it focuses a lot on her role in Challengers, I find that a bit more of a country club vibe could have been insane. It was also officially announced that Law Roach will be her creative director, so wherever there is fashion involved, he will be having a say. They’re relationship is so special, so I’m happy that we’ll continue to see him involved in her styling. Styled by Law Roach.
- Dua Lipa for Vogue France; This is such a different direction for Dua, which is why I don’t think I mind its simplicity. She’s usually seen in the trendiest things and fresh off-the-runway looks, but not in a way that feels forced. She’s what the Instagram and TikTok fashion girlies think they dress like, you know? Anyway, I really enjoy the styling here, and would love to see her in more things like this. I mean, the Rick Owens donut hole alone, feels like enough motivation to channel her inner Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I also really love the Courregés and how it’s a longer version of their iconic vinyl mini and jacket— the more Matrix feel of this one makes sense for the editorial. Styled by Vanessa Reid.
- Paul Mescal for Esquire; Although the styling here isn’t groundbreaking, he does wear a bit of Gucci, and I just wanted to touch on how I didn’t realize his relationship with the brand was so significant. Paul spoke on how he’s worked with the brand for a long time and his fantastic Oscar look, that was by Gucci, was inspired by Casablanca and the way leading men back then looked so well dressed and refined, but also looked effortless. He said a lot of work went into that outfit, with Gucci and his stylist making sure everything down to the length of the jacket was perfect. There are a lot of people that I associate with Gucci, and Paul honestly hadn’t been one of them, but now that I’m thinking back, it does make sense. I also like that he’s become more confident with his styling choices over the years, because I feel like he’s one of the few men that actually tries to be interesting. Anyway, I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of those Prada collars, and this look is most pleasing to me. Styled by Charlie Teasdale.
- Cardi B for Vogue Mexico; First of all, Cardi looks so stunning I could die. Second of all, if I see one more editorial with a plain gray background, so help me god. I suppose there could be connection between the stripped down creative direction, and Cardi’s stripped down styling, but I’m bored and don’t feel like being generous. Regardless, I love seeing her in Saint Laurent. While I really do love Anthony Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent, it’s no secret that it’s usually worn by thin tall women, and we rarely get to see it on curvier women like Cardi. Which is a shame, because look at the material!!! The Schiaparelli Fall 2023 Haute Couture coat is a fantastic feature, and I’m not mad at the Balenciaga. I will say, there is something very 80s/90s supermodel about the photos. Styled by Moses Moreno.
- Kendall Jenner is the new face of Stella McCartney’s Fall 2023 campaign. Stella is a horse girl, Kendall is a horse girl, but not even her going bareback on that horse could keep the horses from eating her up, I fear.
- Beyoncé wore Loewe for her 100th Renaissance tour look, and you know I stan Jonathan Anderson. It’s this beautifully sculpted and fitted metallic corset top with a peplum, that has a black skirt with signature Beyoncé slit underneath. Although the skirt is simple, it allows for the top to be the star of the show. I also love how the gloves have little silver nails, and how the shoes look like a sandal, even though they’re a pump. It all makes sense to me in terms of the way that Jonathan Anderson plays with reality and perception. I do wish that the gloves were the same material as the skirt, though, because their sheen feels out of place.
- Adele wore custom Robert Wun, based on a look from his Spring 2023 Couture collection, and it’s one of my favorite looks that she’s worn during her residency, thus far. The dress is covered in over 15,000 Swarovski crystals, and is meant to resemble the rain that falls during her performance of ‘Set Fire To The Rain’. The gown fits incredibly, and the asymmetrical neckline makes sense with Robert’s usual play with asymmetrical cuts.
So that was this week! I have to go make dinner now.
TTYL!!!
