I feel like I don’t have to apologize for these coming out on a Monday sometimes instead of a Sunday anymore. I feel like it’s something you expect already. Now a Tuesday!!! Then you have permission to fight me. I’m trying to get as much done as I can today, but I had a lot of birthdays this week to celebrate that I didn’t actually realize were all so close together. It’s also fashion week. And the Super Bowl (Usher concert) is today.
Anyway, let’s get into it.
CaSandra Diggs has resigned as CFDA President.
There isn’t much information about why Diggs has stepped down, however I can’t help but wonder if, as usual, inclusivity in the fashion industry, and in positions of power, continues to be performative.
Zac Posen is the new creative director of Gap. Okay!
Look, I love Zac Posen. His designs are so incredibly special, and I obviously hope for the best when it comes to this appointment, however I feel like custom eveningwear and theater/ballet costumes are his sweet spot, you know? I also think it’s interesting that they are positioning him as this beacon of culture. Idk.
- British Vogue March Issue; This is Edward Enninful’s last issue for British Vogue, so I understand why they did what they did. Yes, it is very impressive that they got all of these women to come together on the same day, but, please don’t yell at me, I’m a little underwhelmed. I just really wanted him to pop OFF for the last issue, you know? With so many people on the cover, the fashion had to be simple, otherwise it would have been chaotic, so I get that, I just, it’s nice. Styled by Edward Enninful.
- Sabrina Carpenter for Interview; Sabrina Carpenter is like a little polly pocket, I love her. However, not even she can sell me on those plastic Blumarine dresses. Styled by Ron Hartleben.
- The Donna Karan relaunch has begun!
- Roc Nation and Versace have announced a multi-year partnership. Lmao, WHAT is going on!
- Required reading, hehe. I’m gonna make all of y’all stan Willy, if it’s the last thing I do.
- Zendaya and Law Roach are back to keeping us well fed. Here she’s wearing a look by up anc oming, London based designer, Torishéju, and it’s so much fun. There’s definitely a sci-fi dystopian feel to all the looks we’ve seen Zendaya wear, and you know I love a bit of method dressing, however I feel like they’re also tapping into the colors of the posters. This look in particular features draped, scarf-like pieces which we saw a lot of the characters in Dune wear, and this structural bumber on the top and around the hips adds that little bit of extra intrigue. I also always love seeing such a large star platforming a smaller brand.
She also gave us this custom Bottega Veneta moment, based on the Fall 2023 collection, and for Zendaya they’ve made it a little more eveningwear appropriate with the longer skirt. It’s gorgeous. I love the ostrich leather around the waist and the little bit of under boob moment, however, there was something about the whole torso being covered in that leather in the original look that felt really satisfying to me. Regardless, I still think this looks great.
- Florence wore Galvan, and I’m not obsessed. In the previews and trailers we’ve been given, we’ve seen her character wear some chainmail pieces a la Rabanne, and I feel like this was perhaps trying to channel that. There’s something about these randomly place crystals that feels very hot glued on, especially since the lining of the top and bottom at very evident.
This on the other hand, stunning!!! Y’all know I love Standing Ground, and these little beads placed in between the jersey to create a ruched effect, feel very sand worm-esque. Something else I’ve noticed is that Florence has been wearing a lot of light colors, which is something her character does as well! I think this is one of my favorite looks of hers, ever.
- This is simple, but I’m into it! It’s very Timothée with the skinny pant, boot moment of it all, but those pants fit incredibly. I also just feel like we don’t see people wearing Hermès enough, because it is often associated with a more conservative and mature audience, but those clothes are stunning. I believe Timmy has worn the brand quite recently, so I’m into this little duo. The scarf is obviously very Hermès, but also makes sense in the context of Dune.
The Prada look he wore could have been so good, and it was not. We’ve seen Prada send many a suit with tucked in jacket down the runway that looks buttery smooth, but this is so incredibly clunky. I’m fine with the scrunched sleeve situation, but I don’t understand why we couldn’t have at least removed the pocket flaps— that alone would have made a huge difference. I just feel like this look was overcomplicated for no reason.
- Austin. Austin, Austin, Austin. Your whole cast is pulling UP, and this is what you give us?! It’s not terrible, but I just wish he would shake it up every once in a while, because I’m so bored. He plays a very interesting character, to say the least, and I wish he’d play into that a little bit. Imagine he wore Rick Owens?! He never would, but IMAGINE.
Then he gave us a Saint Laurent, pinstripe suit, which is stunning and fits incredibly, but like, why gat rid of the slutty tank that came down the runway. Sure, it has nothing to do with the movie we’re promoting, and I guess I can’t expect everyone to method dress, but at least it was fun!!
- Emma Corrin continues to be the coolest ever. This is technically a look form the Spring 2024 collection, just in a different color way and I’m obsessed. There were also plaid loafers that were paired with the look on the runway that I think would have made more sense here, but still, a cute little shift dress.
- Dare I say, this is the best Margot Robbie has ever looked? I mean, the shimmer on this is incredible, and the draping is obviously lovely. Although this dress is from 1998, the cocotte dress is such a timeless style, it’s no wonder it continues to be so popular at Westwood.
- Maisie Williams in Erdem is STUNNING. She was doing press for The New Look, in which she plays Christian Dior’s sister, Catherine. The jacket has that new look feel, and everything fits incredibly. The embroidery and ruffled pleating is beautiful, and I love the hat, of course.
- Matthew Williams may have never given us a Givenchy Couture collection, but Julien Macdonald did, and god bless. We rarely see her not wearing Louis Vuitton, so it’s nice to see something else every once in a while, and this is stunning. I love the way the lattice work weaving draws your eye into the center, and how it just flows into this fringe skirt. I just really love when a dress works with its own fabric to create dimension and texture, instead of adding extra embroidery.
- I don’t know where Ariana was wearing this Balenciaga dress to, but she looks like she’s on set, so a am I to think that Glinda wears Balenciaga?? In the lookbook we see a matching pink panteshoe, of course, but I like the white tights worn here better. It feels more ballerina, more Glinda, more Hollywood. It’s sweet, but I just really want context. Also! If this is what we’re wearing randomly next to a trailer, those press looks better be IT!
So that was this week! Lmao, wait, should I include the football players outfits that they wear when walking into the Super Bowl in next weeks newsletters? Travis looked like he came to this place for magic, and this guy had a Birkin.
TTYL!!!
