It has just occurred to me that I never sent out couture fashion week reviews LMAO. Deciding whether I should do it this week or at the end of fashion month. Let me know if you have any strong opinions on the matter.
Anyway, let’s get into it.
- Sabrina Carpenter for Vogue; A lot of strong opinions on the internet about this one! There’s been a lot of discourse surrounding references and whether they should continue being a thing, and, well, yes! References are important and a reference does not discredit a creative idea entirely. However, I do think there is a way to go about it. We’ve discussed this time and time again so you know I’m not a fan of a reference for reference’s sake. As for Sabrina Carpenter doing Madonna drag doing Marilyn Monroe drag? I’m not obsessed. This isn’t the fist time we’ve seen Sabrina reference this Madonna era; she wore a Bob Mackie dress to the VMAs that was worn by the pop icon to the Oscars. I wrote a whole piece about how Kim Kardashian aligns herself with pop culture icons and this kind of feels similar to me, except that Sabrina has just started to develop a very specific brand image, and so things like this feel a little too on the nose. That’s why I loved her JW Anderson gown at the Grammys so much. Its nod to Shirley MacLaine in What a Way to Go!, felt very relevant to Sabrina’s whole schtick, without being too copy and paste. I think Sabrina is building a strong enough identity, where she doesn’t have to rely on constant referencing. Also! Don’t love Dolce on the cover, but. Styled by Ib Kamara.
- Timothée Chalamet for W; I always love these director issues from W. So fun! Love the moodiness of this— should Denis direct a film noire????? Also the Kyle MacLachlan feature with a David Lynch shoutout? I die. Styled by Matthew Henson.
- Ayo Edebiti for W; Ayo directed by Luca Guadagnino— this one’s for me!! Love the fabulous Hollywood starlet of it all. I love the way Luca just considers everything. Which feels like a silly and obvious thing to say about a director, but the way each look really resonates with the setting makes me swoon. Styled by Sara Moonves.
- Mikey Madison and Hoeyon for W; Sean Baker loves a doughnut shop. There’s something very pop art about this that I enjoy. Styled by Allia Alliata di Montereale.
- Michael B. Jordan for GQ; Love this. Very cool and very referential to Michael’s latest movie, Sinners, without being too on the nose. I love the icy, monochromaticness of it, but I also always love Mobolaji’s styling, so no shocker there. Styled by Mobolaji Dawodu.
- Gabby Windey for The Cut; I love Gabby, but really I had to include this just because of the Prada Fall 2011 dress. Styled by Emma Oleck.
- Taste! You guys don’t understand how hard it is to find flare jeans that fit this well when you aren’t 6 ft. tall. I need them. I also love when Kendrick wears Martine Rose because I feel like they both really consider their communities within their work.
- Samuel L. Jacson wore custom Bode which is quite fitting since their most recent Bode Rec collection was all about all American tropes. That collection didn’t really hit, but this does!
- No notes. Ever.
- On the runway this look had a coat lined with this same floral print, and while I think that was fine, I actually love how it looks on its own as a two piece. You can see the silhouette of the bubble skirt a lot better this way and it’s very fun and sweet.
- Stunning. I think Miss Sohee was the perfect brand for this white lotus inspired look. That embroidery up top is very nice and I like how it starts to turn a little bit yellow as we reach the chiffon skirt.
- This look started some drama. While Anya is wearing custom Dior, this winged mini strikes a very similar resemblance to a look from Jeremy Scott SS1998. Of course there is the different of Anya holding up the pleats herself, whereas on Jeremy’s design they are attached, but still, this one is hard to deny.
- It is actually stupid how good he looks here? Fresh off the runway Dior that I’d argue looks even better on him than it did on the runway. I mean, the cut of that jacket is incredible and the pants are very nicely tailored. It might be a simple suit, but pwah.
- Here the pants are just a touch too baggy, and I actually think the jacket could be tailored better too, but it’s not an awful suit. I’ve seen Danny in better so I’m just not gagged. I did, however, see Captain America: Brave New World yesterday and he is gorgy, respectfully.
- Him wearing this full, pink Chrome Hearts look in Berlin actually makes the most sense, I think.
- The coolest bitch to live, actually.
- This is one of my favorite fonts of Louis Vuitton looks— I will never get tired of them. So precise and so perfect. Also, I just get lost in this color. Stunning.
- Colman is wearing Marni here and it’s so good. Not that anyone is at all surprised. I love the way the jacket is gathered at the waist, almost making it feel like a track suit.
So that was this week! My heater has been broken for about a month now and my landlord is useless, so I’m burning alive. I probably complained about this already but I deserve to complain again, because why am I in a sports bra and shorts, with all my windows open in the middle of February?
TTYL!!!
