Not too much in actual happenings this week, but a lot of looks and magazine shoots to discuss.
ALSO, fashion month has begun, so you can, of course, expect mini reviews on the shows in separate newsletters.
This is my second time doing fashion month reviews, and I can’t confirm or deny that I have now gotten the hang of it. I’m sure I’ll leave all the shows until the last minute again and have endless regret. Pressure me to do better. Please.
The small designer, Duran Lantink, was in talks with Heron Preston to collaborate, but nothing official ever came of it. Then five days ago(three years after their original conversation), Heron Preston debuted one of Duran Lantink’s designs as part of their SS22 collection; no credit, no money, no heads up given. I think you know what the correct opinion to have about this is.
You’re probably like, Caroline, isn’t this just basically the same as when you review people’s outfits in the ‘Other Stuff’ section of this newsletter? And to that I say, no! This is Rihanna! She is always unmatched, and therefore her pregnancy fits are also, unmatched. All I can hear in my head is Maddy Perez from Euphoria saying, “ I would never wear any of those nasty maternity clothes, I would just be me, plus pregnant.”
I didn’t think anyone could make me say this, but leave it to Rihanna to have me muttering, “I can’t wait till I’m pregnant.”
With that being said, I don’t think serving looks is reason enough to have a child, so.
Anyway, first we had this cool ass look. Did sale of Carhartt sweatshirts increase after this photo dropped? Because it should have.
Honestly, at this point I hope every single one of Rihanna’s pregnancy looks show off her belly. Pregnancy is the perfect low-rise denim time. Also, this vintage jacket is insane. The ankle strap of her heels was clasped around her jeans and that is something I will absolutely be doing.
This custom The Attico look was of course, great. I love the green and purple together, and love that this is reminiscent of their most recent collection; a great way to do custom.
Last, but certainly not least, is this custom Alaïa moment. I mean yeah… just yeah.
- Sydney Sweeney for Cosmopolitan; I absolutely love this shoot; she looks like a dream. It all makes sense and I’m understanding this story. The shot of this sweater, headband moment is sweet, but then the cut off adds just the right amount of spice. This Fendi moment is great, and the color story is lovely. It’s the Gucci dress and heart clutch for me, though. Also the heels matching the clutch perfectly? Please. Styled by Cassie Anderson.
- Willem Dafoe for Interview; I feel robbed of looks here, but the conversation between Willem and Mark Ruffalo makes up for it. Anyway, we did get a good Balenciaga moment, and when I saw this Raf dress with the tank underneath, I gasped. I feel like Willem actually likes fashion, and Interview would have been a cool place to see some more looks. Styled by Mel Ottenberg.
- Jennifer Lopez for Rolling Stone; Listen, J.Lo’s fashion isn’t exactly something I look forward to, but the Balmain cover moment is good. The Saint Laurent was fine, although I don’t know if Jennifer is a Saint Laurent girl in my head, and the Hervé Léger was a little boring. Styled by Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn.
- Simone Biles for Porter; It’s the Christopher John Rogers for me, but you already knew that. One thing I really liked about the styling was the mixing of pieces where you wouldn’t expect them to be; sweaters around the waist, dresses as skirts. There was a lot of monochrome moments, and for the most part it was cute. I don’t really love the length of these Sergio Hudson pants or the double belt. Styled by Shibon Kennedy.
- Robert Pattinson for GQ; this is one of the best cover shoots I have seen in a long time. This is interesting, it’s fun, and it makes sense. With The Batman coming about soon, I definitely think this shoot not only matches the vibe Rob is going to bring to this movie, but it also matches his eccentric personality. I also really enjoy the “transformation” that happens in this shoot; going from polished to unhinged. The shot of the Balmain pants and Helmut lang sweater is too good. Also, the whole Ann Demeulemeester look??? Are you JOKING?! Also really loved the Bottega moment. This shot felt like a callback to the Joker; the purple Diesel sweat, the green lighting, the messed up mouth. This also made me think of Jim Carrey’s riddler. Overall, fantastic styling, fantastic concept, fantastic creative direction. Styling by Mobalaji Dawodu.
- Maude Apatow for Interview; This is the Maude fashion moment I need it! The school girl styling here is great. Love these Thom Browne shoes. The only look I didn’t really love was this sweater/skirt combo, but overall, love. I also appreciate when there is actually styling done, and people aren’t just being put in full off-the-runway looks. You can’t tell me this person would not be a Wes Anderson character. Styled by Mel Ottenberg.

- Kim Kardashian for Vogue; So it is American Vogue, therefore the boring background and concept is no surprise, however, Kim does look fantastic and there are some great fashion moment. The Loewe dress on the cover is one of my favorites from this collection and I’m happy it’s making its rounds. I also really love the shot of this Balmain dress, and this Alaïa looks fantastic. Kim has had a long relationship with Givenchy, so it’s always nice to see her wearing the brand, and this Rick Owens moment is delish. There was of course a Skims moment, but who cares about the Skims when there’s a Balenciaga hat!!! Some shots were very reminiscent of Egyptian art and others made many people think of photos we’ve typically seen of Black women. I don’t think it’s my place to question the stylist’s choices when it comes to this, given that I am a white women, however I do think that the elephant in the room continues to be the Kardashian’s use of black culture for their benefit. Definitely a conversation to be had. Styled by Carlos Nazario. ALSO, all kids styled by Miss North West!
- EBONY Magazine André Leon Talley Tribute; I mean, what can I say? This was a beautiful tribute to the former EBONY editor and icon. There’s also the conversation about why Kim was on the March cover of Vogue instead of them doing an André tribute. While I understand the timing and circumstance of the situation is unfortunate, I don’t think Vogue could have managed (or afforded, oop) to pump out a new cover that quickly. Could they have done a digital tribute? Absolutely. Digital cover by Brandon Breaux.
- Channing Tatum for VMAN; I never think Channing Tatum is hot, and then every once in a while he does some shit like this, and I rethink everything I know to be true. Listen, the fashion, or lack there of… is good. I love that Channing Tatum is in his The Row/ RHW era. Styled by George Cortina.
- Like every college professor I have ever scoffed at, I am giving you recommended reading this week!!! This article about Proenza Schouler, they’re journey, and how they are basically still a thing, is really worth a read.
- So Bad Bunny is the new face of Jacquemus, and it’s interesting to say the least. Jacquemus is no stranger to shock factor, and this ad campaign is no different. Nobody is looking at these photos and thinking, “Oh my god, I love these clothes!” The clothes looks pretty bad; it’s about getting people talking, and talking we did. Sure they might get some sales from this; maybe one of Bad Bunny’s fans will look into the brand and find something they feel is worth their disposable income. I mean, I’m not complaining about the photos, I’m JUST SAYING!!!
- Someone is going to do a case study about Casey Cadwallader for Mugler bodysuits in the future. With that being said, this custom bodysuit Dua Lipa wore on tour is insane. I loved the way this sparkled as she did her silly little dance moves.
- More Mugler!!! It’s kind of giving sexy Gumby, but I’m into it, I guess. Hate the shoe.
- Alright, I know I’m really hesitant in accepting a belt, but a belt corset? I must say, I’m intrigued; especially for a menswear look.
- Miss Olivia wore a stunning Balmain dress, but the dress is wearing her, I fear.
- Adele in a Fendi suit looking snatched and stunning!!! She also dropped it low on a stripper pole in this suit, which was everything to me.
- Y’all would’t stop making fun of Julia and her leather pants, so she said, I raise you a leather skirt! Anyway, she looks great in this Miaou set.
-Tom Holland is on a press run, and I love that he’s taken Law as a stylist. Anyway, Tom is a Prada boy now, so it’s no surprise he’s wearing the brand. Say what you want, but brown and black go together. Miuccia gets it. It’s just a suit, so there isn’t much to say, but I like the brown.
Tom also seems to be wearing Saint Laurent quite a bit. That actually makes more sense to me than Prada does for him. I like this more casual moment; it’s nothing too crazy, but the heeled boot is *chef’s kiss*.
So this… makes me giggle. That’s really all I can say at the moment, maybe I’ll update before sending!
- Blake Livley in a suit is my sexuality. No, but, this reminds me of her A Simple Favor era, and I loved that for her! Sergio Hudson knows how to make a rich and delicious color. Fits great.
- That circular shape on the torso is really, really stunning. The mesh around the armhole could be a little crisper. I also have mixed feelings about the back. I’m fickle.
-Hunter Schaffer in this Miu Miu set and Margiela Tabi boots is much to think about. She gets me.
This week was a pretty fun time, right? Anyway, I have fashion week shows to give my unsolicited opinion on. Stop distracting me!!!
TTYL!!!
