It’s another one of those weeks where I don’t know if I’m going to finish this in time, and, you’re probably wondering… why even tell us that? Well, I think communication is important and I want us to have an open and honest relationship. (Editing Caroline here, I will in fact be finishing this tomorrow, aka Monday, but it’ll be in your inbox first thing in the morning, or afternoon, promise!!!)
Legendary fashion designer, trailblazer, prince of pleats, Issey Miyake has passed away at the age of 84 after battling liver cancer. Miyake’s approach to fashion made the possibilities endless, and his mark on the industry will never be forgotten.
“I prefer to think of things that can be created, not destroyed, and that bring beauty and joy”
RIP
- Jacob Elordi for GQ; This style of photoshoot seems to be very popular amongst the men of Hollywood. Robert Pattinson did it best; I said what I said. Anyway, the fashion here is clearly the lesser focus, but I still want to talk about it. Don’t know why we included a Dolce look; I’m sure a Tom Ford shirt that looks just the same also exists. Eli Russell Linnetz shot this spread, so naturally Jacob is wearing some ERL, as well as the Dior x ERL collection. I really like the vinyl Prada boiler suit and how its been tied at the waist. Given Jacob’s height, I’m sure it looked great upright as well; do y’all remember when they put Kim Kardashian in that thing without any tailoring? The Prada coat with Fear of God pants tucked into Bottega boots is also great; love that we’ve been seeing a lot of Fear of God lately. The Loewe tank with Gucci sequin pants looks like a fun time and I wish we saw it better. I’m sure the Diesel jacket is good, and I know some of y’all ran straight to Wattpad with this photo. The Dries Van Noten look is probably my favorite. The pants were incredible and since Jacob is tall, they just pour down beautifully. On another note, why are all these young male actors so weirdly serious about their craft and trying to be the next Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, etc.; relax. Styled by Mobolaji Dawodu.
- Lewis Hamilton for Vanity Fair; For the cover, Lewis wore the Valentino PP Pink collection, which makes sense given the fact that him and Zendaya are the faces of the campaign. I think it looks great, and I like the sheer top. I really love the styling done here, and how it’s not just a look pulled straight from the runway; all the pieces work well together. This soft and delicious Fendi knit set next to this sharp black Fear of God suited moment is fantastic; the suiting at Fear of God has been so good lately. I like the vintage feel of this Giorgio Armani look and how the untied tie is reminiscent of a cravat. Overall, really great, simple styling. Styled by Eric McNeal.
- Serena Williams for Vogue; Say hello to our September 2022 cover star! Here’s the thing, I can complain about the fashion being boring and not enough for a September cover, but I think it makes sense for the shoot, and as a woman who often takes fashion risks and is seen as strong and powerful, it’s also nice to just allow her to be simple, beautiful, and tapping into femininity and motherhood. Also it’s American Vogue after all, the expectations are really, really low. I think the styling makes sense for the beach, and I enjoy that all the pieces are shades seen in the sky, the sand, and the water. Also, the fact that everything is custom is a bit of a flex. The Balenciaga dress is in a signature Demna jersey material, but the light blue color is one we haven’t seen before; it’s really lovely, and her daughter holding the train is so sweet. The Wales Bonner dress is stunning and the bias cut Sergio Hudson slip dress is simple, but fits nicely. I’m not crazy about the asymmetry in the Ralph Lauren dress, but it fits well, and having two white dresses that basically look the same felt redundant. Serena wears Gucci often, so this makes sense. It’s definitely toned down for Gucci, but the colors match the sky perfectly, and you can see that the embroidery has that 1930s Art Deco vibe Alessandro often taps into. Overall, not anything crazy, but also not bad. I’m a Gabriella Karefa-Johnson stan so can’t confirm or deny any bias that might be interfering. Styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson.
- Angus Cloud for Variety; The PP Pink collection again! Y’all hate to see it, not me, my brain hasn’t been corrupted by the ever changing trend cycle. Anyway, I love this look, and what’s really great about these jackets is the dropped shoulder; delicious. The Versace look is very Versace, and I really enjoy the color story, as well as the clashing prints. The eggplant color of the pants is lovely. One thing that always interested me about Virgil’s Louis Vuitton was how he interpreted the LV logo and checkerboard bring; this jacket is a really great representation of that. I feel like Angus is open to taking risks with his style, so I look forward to seeing more from him in that department. Styled by Danyul Brown.
- I feel like this Kylie Jenner fashion run of a week is to distract from all the other shit happening with that family and Travis pretending people didn’t literally die in front of him, but this Paco moment is really good.
- Tracee Ellis Ross in The Row is everything to me, given the fact that I am nothing if not a stan account for The Row. Anyway, I love the different tones of gray and I love how the pants look like they’re folded over on the waist but instead just a different color. The collar choker is also *chef’s kiss*. While the pants do fit her, I wish they were baggier like they were on the model, originally. I’ve come to realize that The Row is actually selling them in the style seen on Tracee, but like… size down, let loose!
Tracee is ALWAYS going to sell you on a look. I mean, it’s Christopher John Rogers so this look in particular sells itself, but nonetheless, she is working! it! I love how signature CJR it is; you know who designed this dress with just one look. His work with color is always incredible, and I love the movement these streamers of fabric create.
- Daisy Edgar Jones in Conner Ives is really sweet. This shawl dress has really beautiful detail, and I love the way Conner uses repurposed materials.
- Thomas wore Dior to a screening of his move The Invitation, and while I don’t hate this suit in general, I think it’s too large on him. The pants are supposed to be looser, but here they puddle too much, and instead of creating a streamline look, like monochrome outfits tend to do, it’s shortening him. I do enjoy the double lapel, however, and how it extends to look like additional sleeves.
- Sabrina Sato wore a Prada look that is a lot more boho than what we’ve been seeing from the brand recently. However, we’ve been seeing a lot of ribbed tank tops lately, and this dress is basically a ribbed tank top. I think the blunt fringe is fine, and instead of there being a metal, Prada triangle by the neckline, there is just the Prada logo printed in the shape of a triangle. She looks great, and I think the dress accomplishes the beachy vibe that seems to have been the goal here.
- Megan wearing Poster Girl makes sense to me. I know seeing these dresses and jumpsuits has felt like overkill lately, due to the fact that the trend cycle moves so fast and we like to act like something can only be worn for two days before it goes “out of style”, but if you like them, I still think they’re interesting pieces. This style is obviously a brand signature and as long as they keep evolving it, I don’t see a problem. I think this light brown creates a great naked feel as well. The one thing I don’t understand is the snake print block heel? Something daintier and strappier would have been better.
Hanifa is a hot girl brand and Meg is a hot girl, so I’m here for this. The colors are fun, and I think it’s a great casual look. You can also buy it yourself on Hanifa’s website for $295!
Finally, Meg wore custom Mônot to co-host The Tonight Show and it’s fine, but it’s a formula of dress that we’ve seen from her over and over again; same dress, different font. I also think the draping on the hip could be a bit better.
- I really like Lili Reinhart in SIR. I’m here for a monochrome moment, I like that it’s a bit oversized, the lining on the top is great, and the pleating on the pants is yummy. Brown is also my underrated fave.
- I appreciate that Joshua Bassett took a risk with this Saint Laurent look, and I like all the pieces separately, but they make no sense together. There’s just too many textures happening all at once. The shimmery mock neck is funn, the cummerbund belt is interesting, the wine velvet pants fit well, and the heeled boot is a 10/10, but all at once? I’m overstimulated. Still, at least it’s not a boring, black suit.
- Maitreyi Ramakrishnan wore custom Bach Mai to the season three premiere of Never Have I Ever and it’s fine, but the look this dress is based on was originally a silver metallic color with an opera glove and thigh high boot. WHERE IS THE DRAMA HERE?! She looks nice, but I’m underwhelmed and I want better for her. On another note, I feel like Maitreyi is always styled very maturely, and I’m not understanding why we’re doing that. The same thing happened with Milly Bobbie Brown, and I need everyone to remember that they are not middle aged women, thnx.
- How can you be so close, but miss the mark completely? The look was RIGHT THERE! The tank underneath with the shirt left unbuttoned would have been fine had the matching pants also been worn. Instead we wore an awful shoe and jogger. I need answers, quickly. I also wonder if Darren wore Issey Miyake given the fact that the designer recently passed away, and Darren is part Japanese.
- Listen, I don’t think this is a bad dress, I actually really enjoyed this resort collection, but it’s too long on Chloe. The awkward length ruins an otherwise lovely dress. Originally in the lookbook it was style with heels, and I actually prefer the go-go boot, because it adds to the mod, 60s vibe, but the colors are wrong. I know Moschino is always a bit kooky and garish, I love that about them, but here it just makes no sense.
- Rebecca Black in Saint Sintra is the perfect balance of sweet and sexy. The ruffles and tiered material add a bit innocence, while the sheerness, latex, and lace and all the kink.
So that was this week!
Sorry she’s late, I’ll do better next week probably. Anyway, back to having a panic attack? From what? Who knows! How fun!
TTYL!!!
