Woah, sorry for the delay. I know we’re used to me sending these out on Monday sometimes, but Tuesday is pushing it, even for me. It’s been a week, what can I say. I did consider just grouping these two weeks together, but my OCD said, haha think again. The SAG-AFTRA strike is over and everyone was on a red carpet literally a minute after it ended, so there is much to discuss!
Anyway, let’s get to it.
I think everyone was met with utter shock when earlier this week it was announced that David Renne had passed away at the age of 46.
His appointment as creative director of Moschino had barely just begun on November 1, with so much promise ahead— my thoughts and prayers go out to all his friends and family during this time.
“Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” has been announced as the theme of the 2024 Met Gala.
You might be thinking, Sleeping Beauty? So, like, fairytales? Not at all! Although I wouldn’t put it past someone to actually dress up as Aurora, or at least wear that one Viktor & Rolf collection— you know the one. But I digress, the exhibit will feature 250 rare items from the Costume Institutes permanent archive, and will span over 400 years of fashion history. We can except to see pieces from brands like Schiaparelli, Dior, and Givenchy, mixed in with gems, like a ballgown by Charles Fredrick Worth (the godfather of couture) from 1877. Loewe is sponsoring the event alongside TikTok and Condé Nast, so the brand will definitely be featured quite a bit as well.
The sleeping beauties, as they are being called, are delicate, archival pieces that we don’t get to see very often due to their age. These are pieces that have to be maintained and conserved in certain temperatures away from light, sweat, etc. which is why we will see them displayed in new ways through the use of AI, lights, scents, and more. Andrew Bolton said this will be a sensory experience, separated into three section: land, sky, and sea.
As a fashion history nerd, my heart is bursting. Also, while I know that the Met Gala themes are planned quite some time in advance, it’s interesting to see this one come at a time where archival pulls are being seen more than ever before. Wearing and owning archive fashion has become an IYKYK sign of wealth that we see many celebrities and their stylists sport.
While I do look forward to all the ways the theme will be interpreted, especially because I have so many ideas on what I would do if I was attending, I do fear that the girls usually disappoint me, especially when they have more of a vague theme. But what do you think?
- Jeremy Allen White for British GQ; This was shot by Luke Gilford, which is why you thought you were looking at stills from a Troye Sivan music video. Remember when I said every single editorial featuring a man this year involves him wearing a tank top? Yeah, theory still checks out. Anyway, there’s not too many major fashion moments here, but I do love a vintage sportswear moment. What I love more is how the way this is shot makes it seem like the other people in these photos can’t actually see him, lmao. Styled by Michael Darlington.
- Nicki Minaj for Vogue; FINALLY. It’s about damn time Nicki was on the cover of American Vogue. However, we have to be honest with ourselves, and this was incredibly underwhelming. With the release of Pink Friday Pt.2 in the near future, I think Nicki is really trying to show how she’s grown since Pt. 1 was released. In her ‘73 Questions’ interview with Vogue, she said that her style back then was “kooky” and that it’s very much not that anymore. In this article, she mentions that Vetements is setting the vibe for this fashion era. Speaking of Vetements, the oversized Vetements look she wears here is probably my favorite of the whole editorial— I love the way we’ve been seeing this ridiculously oversized collection styled in very elegant, luxurious ways. She looks like a Greek statue on the cover, wearing Valentino Couture, and I loved seeing Ferragamo and Bottega featured, but they just weren’t major fashion looks. I loved the Marc suit, and it’s nice seeing an iconic New York based designer featured, but it doesn’t really make sense to me. Also, that Dolce & Gabbana jump scare was crazy. I don’t know, with the bland backgrounds and lack luster fashion moments, I just expected something more intriguing, especially since we’ve been waiting so long for it. Styled by Max Ortega.
- Ncuti Gatwa for British GQ; Oh, this is scrumptious. Dolce jump scare aside, the styling here is really good, and is a great way of pairing pieces from different brands together. The one look where he’s wearing Chet Lo, Dries Van Noten, AND Ferragamo all at the same time made my gasp. Styled by Angelo Mitakos.
- Andrew Scott for British GQ; Agani, GQ is one of the few publications where we see actual styling being done, and it’s just so refreshing. They also always have such a clear vision with their editorials, even when their more commercial. Styled by Angelo Mitakos.
- You might have noticed that eveningwear was missing from the lineup at Sabato de Sarno’s Spring 2024 debut for Gucci. Well, that’s because he debuted it this past week at the LACMA Art + Film Gala. While I do like the eveningwear looks shown a bit more than the ready-to-wear, I’m still not really blown away, nor will I be thinking about them for days to come. I will say, I did really like the looks worn by Mariacarla and Vittoria, but other than that, eh. It’s all fine.
- There’s a new khy drop, ALREADY. I love fast fashion hahahahahahaha. This time it’s a collaboration with Entire Studios, and includes various puffer styles and a base layer in three color ways. While I still don’t think we need more influencer merch repurposed as a clothing brand, I do think this collection will sell. Like, her audience is gonna eat this UP!
- The KarJenners have truly been everywhere lately. Kendall’s latest campaign with Jacquemus was released for their holiday collection, and she’s still as boring as ever. I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt, in fact that she didn’t have much to work with, but also, Zendaya could have served this up on a sparkling silver platter, so I don’t know. I just want Kendall to give me one singular emotion.
- Naomi Campbell, on the other hand, is the new face of Alexander W*ng, who is a sexual predator that drugged and assaulted multiple queer and trans people, so. Not that Naomi hasn’t been questionable and problematic in the past, but this is still disappointing to see. Everyone has a price, I guess. I really don’t understand why we keep giving brands like this one or Dolce & Gabbana multiple chances. It’s not like they’re doing anything better than anyone else anyway.
- Hunter Schafer and Dara, her stylist, have been eating the girls right UP on this press run for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. When I saw this dress from Spring Fall 2023 Couture, I choked. The dress is a crocheted knit that is embroidered with these mosaic pieces that pant a trompe l’oeil body. This collection explored different artists—this look, in particular, being inspired by Lucien Freud. I mean, she looks like a dream, but the serves didn’t stop there.
We also got this custom Prada moment, based on the SS2009 collection. The girlies love this collection, and I am girlies! It’s one of my favorite Prada collections, and was the first time we really saw this crinkle style from Prada. What’s so special about these pieces in particular, is that the crinkle is created by metal rods. I also just love the way Miuccia Prada takes luxury fashion and turns it on its head, making something so exclusive feel disheveled and unkempt. Hunter’s look takes the silhouette of one look and the yellow metallic sheen of another, to create the dreamiest, liquid gold red carpet moment. ALSO! Her hair is styled just like the models that walked that show— a woman after my own heart.
The Dries is a moment I don’t see people talking about enough, but how fucking cuNT OF HER!!! Someone give Dara a raise, right now. I believe Hunter used to be styled by Law Roach, and while that was good too, this relationship is just so special. The pulls feel more niche and more for the fashion girls. They’re not about being pretty, pretty, they’re interesting and compelling, and just so delicious.
Finally, we have this Maison Margiela moment, that really is just so stunning. The plays with proportion and deconstruction are just incredible.
- Rachel Zegler also kind of slayed this red carpet run. Here she’s wearing a look from Alexander McQueen Fall 2023, and while I feel the fit could have been just a hair better, it’s stunning. The peaked neckline is interesting, and this orchid motif on the bubbled mermaid style is really lovely. Rachel said she was paying homage to the fire dress we see Katniss wear in The Hunger Games, and you know I’m always here for a bit of method dressing.
She also wore this Dior Haute Couture dress, again, paying homage to Katniss, and listen, it’s nice! I swear no one’s holding be captive. I’m not blown away by it, but a Christian Dior by Maria Grazia Chiuri moment could have been a lot worse. The woman loves a lace, and she’s not bad at it, so!
- See?! It could have been so much worse! Unfortunately, Jenna was not as lucky as Rachel, and she wore this god awful Dior look that is swallowing her right up. You know what’s even more sad? It looks better on Jenna than it did on the runway.
- Janelle Monaé in Harris Reed is nice, but it’s based on a look from Spring 2024 that was so stunning, it makes this one pale in comparison. Don’t get me wrong, this is still lovely and fits her well, but I loved that original piece so much.
- Y’all know Ayo is a fashion girl, and you know I kneel at the alter of Prada, but this dress is just not entirely my favorite. I love the color, the rounded neckline, and this bow in the back that we’ve been seeing from Prada, but there is just a bit too much fabric in the center, causing it to pucker. It’s fine, Ayo carries the girls on her back a lot of the time, so she can have a little miss every once in a while. I also don’t understand why Prada is so determined to put everyone in a black shoe with everything.
- See what I mean? Always a black shoe. Why couldn’t we have gone brown here. Listen, it’s a simple look, and the shirt could fit better, but all I really want to talk about is the Prada bolo tie. Shut UP. This was for the Dallas premiere of The Iron Claw and the movie takes place in Texas, so I love that Prada incorporated their triangle logo into a little yeehaw moment.
- Okay Kirsten! This silk dress almost looks like burnt velvet, and it’s beautifully cut on the bias. I mean, those colors are incredible, and you know Papa Dries is gonna eat up a floral. Don’t know why she had to ruin it with that necklace, but.
- Kim wearing Balenciaga to an event involving babies is actually crazy. Like, I laughed at loud. She HAS to know. Balenciaga aside, I did like this on the runway, because the model actually looked nude underneath, but the bodysuit here is very obvious on Kim, and just takes me out of the fantasy. The original also had a rounded, pagoda-esque shoulder that was one of the most intriguing things about it. I also wish Kim would actually tailor things to herself, so that it doesn’t look like she’s sinking into the ground.
- Selma said, “My husband is richer than yours!!” Salma loves a simple gown, and I’ve come to accept that. Listen, I don’t mind simple if it’s done well. I wish she didn’t blend into the background and carpet, and that it referenced something from a Bottega collection a little more clearly, but other than that, she looks lovely.
- I feel like I haven’t said that Emma Corrin is the coolest person to live in a long time, so, Emma Corrin is the coolest person to live. Here they are wearing a look from Marc Jacobs Spring 2024, and I think this little 80s number is such a fun time. The sheer tight with the white sock is so good, and the gloves having polkadots is very Marc.
So that was this week! Again, sorry that she’s two days late. It (probably) won’t happen again.
TTYL!!!
xx
