It’s been about a week since I got my appendix taken out and it actually is crazy how much better I feel after a week, but I’m not built for this. I’m too much of a hypochondriac and the fact that I can’t actually see where they cut my appendix off leaves too much to my chaotic imagination in terms of what could go wrong. I’m also very scared of getting a hernia, but I also can’t wait to workout again. I’ve been going on walks, but not as long as I usually go on walks for and I actually think this is how I lose my mind haha.
Anyway, let’s get into it.
- Kylie Jenner for British Vogue; Well, this was a choice. This is the September issue, this the big fashion issue. Now, as far as Kardashian’s go, Kylie is on the pulse of things more than any of her sisters, but with that being said, there is nothing that fascinating about any of them, I fear. Chioma Nnadi spoke about how Kylie walking into the Schiaparelli Couture show this past season was a moment, and she commanded the room which led to the idea of this cover, but I’ve never been that amazed by her at the couture shows, I don’t know. I’ve really enjoyed seeing the direction Chioma has been taking British Vogue in, but this editorial fell flat for me, and that’s a shame. Styled by Ib Kamara.
- George Clooney and Brad Pitt for GQ; The styling here is quite simple, but I very much enjoy this editorial. I’m a broken record at this point, but GQ’s creative direction is always very clear, and that is very much still true here. I like that their outfits are very often complimentary without being too matchy matchy, and there’s something very Palm Springs “roommates” about it all. Styled by George Cortina.
- Naomi Campbell for Harper’s Bazaar; You know Carlos is always gonna eat it up when it comes to styling, and when Naomi’s modeling? A match made in heaven. It’s simple, but effective, and I love that there’s an Alaïa moment since this is honoring her 40 year career and her an Azzedine where very close. Styled by Carlos Nazario.
- Zoë Kravitz for Esquire; This was styled by Zoë’s personal stylist, which is interesting and fun, and she’s so hot. Styled by Andrw Mukamel.
- Willem Dafoe for Harper’s Bazaar; I <3 Willem Dafoe. There is only two outfits here, but I am giggling and kicking my feet, and this is my newsletter, so we’re leaving it here. Styled by Yohana Lebasi.
- Addison Rae for Perfect; This is one of the best editorials I’ve seen all year. The styling and creative direction here make perfect (no pun intended) sense for Addison and this era she’s been in recently. It’s also is a great way at featuring Coach without making the editorial feel too much like a campaign. It’s so natural and doesn’t at all feel like you’re being sold something, and yet, you want that bag! Stuart Vevers has made Coach cool again and the younger generation is all about it. This editorial clearly understands its target demographic. Also, a moment for the tan lines. Styled by Daniel Gaines.
- Dogue; The way that these Dogue covers are better than most of the editorials we’ve seen American Vogue do… Also, I am Pilaf’s biggest fan.
- Yseult absolutely shut DOWN the Paris Olympics, and wore Dior while doing so. A modern interpretation of “The New Look,” this isn’t the worst Dior look I’ve ever seen to be fair. The manipulation of the jacket is a little rough, but it could be worse, and the skirt is tailored beautifully. You also know that I’m always here for a headpiece.
- Billie Eilish is still doing a very weird form of cosplay that I think goes beyond her usual wearing of oversized clothing. Also, Ralph Lauren better either get their shit together or stop being able to create Team USA’s uniforms.
- The Lindsay Lohan renaissance has been strong and she’s been serving look after look! First up we have this scrumptious Balmain Haute Couture moment, giving us business casual. Simple, but so, so good. I love that the front of the shirt appears as if to bring the back of the shirt to the front, and replaces a tie with the label. The way the hips protrude and the way the waist cutouts adds a bit of intrigue to an otherwise simple pencil skirt.
Then she wore Jil Sander, which honestly would have never been on my bingo card, but I’m very happy it happened. Love this gorgeous pistachio green and the drape on the sides, leaving the center solid is intriguing!
Finally, she gave us a little Thom Browne tweed. If I have to convince you that this is good, we clearly will never see eye to eye on anything anyway. The shoes!!
- Jenna Ortega has begun press for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and if the looks keep going in this direction, I never want her to stop! First, she wore this Vivienne Westwood number, sans a layer, and I actually really like the way it’s been styled on Jenna! I feel like you can see the tattered tulle from underneath a little bit better, almost making it feel like a ripped wedding dress. Paired with these stitched latex swirls, it feels very appropriate for Beetlejuice. The draped, off-the-shoulder is lovely, and I also very much enjoy the way the hemline follows the design of the dress.
This Lurline dress had to be my favorite so far, though. Many people found issue with the length, but I think it’s fine— I don’t think this being a mini would have increased its effectiveness. People also have a weird thing about things being “flattering” and we’ve talked about this before, but I’m only interested in commenting on the actual clothing and whether it’s doing what it was intended to. Also, what we consider flattering is often filtered through a Western, Eurocentric lens, so. The top is insane and features these three skulls with their mouths stitched. Not only does that remind me of the shrunken head in Beetlejuice, but it also makes me think of the way you have to say Beetlejuice’s name three times in order to summon him. The color is stunning, and I like that this lace up detail comes down the skirt, because it makes the bottom feel more cohesive with the top.
I even think her more casual looks have been great. The Beetlejuice stripe can be difficult to style, but pairing it with a more casual bottom, like a classic pair of jeans, is smart and it works!
I do hate that this is Dolce and think there could be a touch less puckering, but she does look hot, and I’m here for this little pinstripe skirt suit. It’s giving Gomez Addams.
Every time I think she can’t do worse, she does! The way I know she’s only carrying this dog because it matches her outfit.
- Now imagine if this is how Emily actually dressed in Paris! I believe this is custom, based on the Spring 2023 Couture collection. On the runway, the dress was styled a little more a la Emily (derogatory), so I actually like the way it’s been styled on Lily a lot more. it’s simple, but very Armani, and I don’t think the sequins, harlequin, and peplum feel like too much since it is an all black dress.
- My queen Philippine Leroy Beaulieu stuns on and off screen! She’s wearing Schiaparelli Couture, because of course she is, and it’s gorgeous! Again simple, but I love this print you can see the negative space creating. The hips give us a stunning little robe de style moment, and I’m here for it.
Finally, Ashley Park wore Lever Couture. Here’s the thing, Leah Lewis wore a version of this dress to the Oscars and it was one of my favorite looks of the night, like, I thought about it for days. Except hers was pink, which I think was a more effective color for these horse hair ribbons. The silver here just feels too abrasive and muddled, and doesn’t have the same dreamy effect as the pink did.
So that was this week! I’ve been thinking about the direction I want this newsletter to go in, and while I think these weekly recaps are a fun and light way to get into what’s happening in fashion on a base level, the pieces where I do more research are always more my favorite. I’d also love to start an interview series that I have great idea for, but I don’t know if we’re “big” enough for people to want to even be a part of it, you know?
TTYL!!!
