IMPORTANT! I want to start a kind of interview series about style/personal style/art, etc. and I know some fashion girlies follow me on here, so if you’re based in NYC and would like to be featured and help me give this idea life, please message me here or on insta and let me know!<3 Thank you, love you, mean it.
Anyway, let’s get into it.
The fashion industry can never microdose news. First, we got the announcement that Dries Van Noten would be stepping down as creative director of his eponymous brand, and his last collection for the brand would be for the men’s spring 2025 season in June.
Stab me in the heart, why don’t you.
However, he did post a very touching goodbye letter that made me feel hopeful about the future of the brand. Dries Van Noten is one of those designers that felt like pure magic to me when I first got into fashion at a young age, and is one of the very few that continues to have that effect on me to this day. Season after season, I am never disappointed by a collection, and there is always so many pieces within the collections that I yearn for. He designs clothing in a way that realizes women are all so different, and that realizes style goes beyond just the clothes. All his collections are like perfectly packaged gifts, and he creates dreams that can actually be livable realities. He’s a designers designer, and he really has shaped fashion and the world with his clothing. I will forever treasure every Dries Van Noten that I own, and for now I will continue to spiral down a rabbit hole of his interviews, while I cry.
In all seriousness, I wish him all the most wonderful days in his garden. There’s also something to be said about a designer knowing when it’s time to step down and give way to a new generation, while also knowing when it’s time to step down before a burnout point.
THEN a few days later, Pierpaolo Piccioli announced he was parting ways with Valentino after 25 years at the brand. Although not his eponymous brand, it is very hard to imagine a Valentino without Pierpaolo at the helm, just because his Valentino is what many people associate with the brand, and has had so many identifiable moments.
Although he wasn’t always consistent when it came to talk and action, with things like inclusivity, there’s no denying what he did at Valentino was beautiful, and really helped keep the house codes alive. His work with color blocking is obviously like no other, but his use of texture and creation of silhouettes was just as good. It also makes his all black, funeral procession of a Fall 2024 collection hit a little different— the DRAMA!
According to WWD, there’s rumors that Maria Grazia Chiuri and Alessandro Michele are being looked at for the position. If you don’t know, MGC was actually at Valentino with Pierpaolo for quite some time before going to Dior, and although her Dior makes my head hurt, the sales are good, so I don’t think she’s moving any time soon. As for Alessandro, it’s no secret I was a huge fan of his Gucci, and I am not here for this erasure that seems to be happening of him. I would be very interested to see an Alessandro Michele Valentino, but at the same time, I’m like, another white man? You know what I mean?
- Nicole Kidman for Elle; A lot of Dolce and Balenciaga is interesting, but she does look hot. The Loewe, draped jersey dress though! Styled by Nicola Formichetti.
- Regina King for Harper’s Bazaar; My heart somersaults for Regina King. She has been through so much and is so talented and so radiant and looks so lovely here. Carlos ate the styling, obviously, and it feels incredibly cohesive with the creative direction to me. Styled by Carlos Nazario.
- There’s a Hermès lawsuit, LMAO. Essentially, two people were like Hermès won’t sell you a Birkin unless you buy other stuff and that’s not cool! The Birkin is obviously a status symbol, and one thing a luxury brand will not be willing to do is democratize status. They might make you think they’re willing, by telling you they agree to sell anyone a Birkin, but that Birkin will not be of the same quality, I promise you. This is a bigger conversation than just the lawsuit, but it’ll be very interesting if they lose.
- Nicolas de Felice, the creative director of Courrèges, is the next guest designer for Jean Paul Gaultier Couture. This one is about to be for all the sexy people.
- Another Gucci Horsebit loafer campaign with another internet boyfriend.
- Fran Drescher is the face of Ami’s Spring 2024 campaign, and my heart(‘:
- This mini stands on its own, but the styling on the runway was really the moment.
- Very cute Shushutong Spring 2024 moment! Sydney continues the black and white vibe for Immaculate press.
- Kylie Jenner in Ferragamo— it’s cute, and the leather is really smooth on this piece. I love her commitment to never wearing Khy, but wearing things that look like they could be Khy.
So that was this week! She was an itty bitty one. On another note, has anyone been to Ireland? Is October a bad time to go or no. Would April be better? I’m feeling impulsive.
TTYL!!!
