I am writing to you sans appendix. I’ll spare you of most of the details, but Wednesday night I started to feel like I had really intense gas pains and nothing I did would make them go away. I maybe fell asleep for like two hours and then on Thursday the pain was so bad I could barely move. As someone with a history of chronic gut issues, everyone thought I was being dramatic, but alas! Appendicitis. After hours in the emergency room where no one acts like there is any emergencies happening, I was told I would have to stay overnight and would have surgery the following morning on Friday. Well, the following morning turned into the following 5:00PM, since I was an “add-on” so I had to wait for a time in the schedule to open up. The wait was annoying but my cocktail of painkillers did make it more bearable. I don’t actually think I’ve lied down for that long ever in my life.
So now, I am two days post-op and still achy, but I’ve been taking my little walks and I’ve been eating my normal meals, and for some reason my skin looks fantastic??? Does that have something to do with being hooked up to an IV drip for 24 hours? The CO2 they pumped into my stomach to see my insides better is still making my right shoulder and ribs hurt, so that’s fun. Coughing also sucks. I sneezed once and felt like I ripped everything open. I also am trying not to spiral into convincing myself that I will be the 1% of people that have complications post appendectomy because my brain does not like me to feel peace.
Also! I took two pairs of grippy socks from the hospital, because turns out, they are perfect for someone who can’t wear socks sometimes because they feel too much like socks.
Anyway, let’s get into it!
- Blake Lively and Hugh Jackman for Vogue; This is a tricky one. On the one side, I’m thrilled to see American Vogue doing something a little more fun in taking a storytelling approach. I also think that Baz Luhrmann and Blake Lively are a great match and definitely both have a more is more mentality. Some of these shots definitely read more holiday season than September issue to me, mainly because of all the Cartier, which is also interesting when we think of the conversation surrounding the fact that brands are now selling you a lifestyle instead of a product. This is what this editorial feels like it’s trying to do, and reminds me of the times when campaigns and editorials were actually the reason I wanted to buy certain pieces. Now, with all that being said, they still managed to pick the most boring fucking photo for the cover. God bless. Styled by Tone Goodman.
- Lucky Blue and Nara Aziza Smith for GQ Hype; Oh wow! The creative direction here was no mistake, I can tell you that much. Yet I can’t deny that these are really gorgeous photos. On another note, why do famous people never show their son’s face but always show their daughters? Anyway! Styled by Jon Tietz.
- A look at my king, Nicolas Ghesquière’s first decade at Louis Vuitton. Steven Meisel really ate this up.
- Blake heard me talking shit about her so she put on Christopher John Rogers. Alright, fine I’ll give her this one. CJR can do no wrong in my eyes and this is such a scrumptious play with print. There’s a lot happening here, but it’s all happening harmoniously. I also just love that you can look at a CJR look and know immediately who designed it.
And this is why we can’t have nice things. The trompe l’oeil chaps are insane. INSANE.
People thought the Dior was dated, but I thought it was really chic. It’s simple, but the cut is beautiful and the little daisies printed all over aren’t too in your face. The shoes and bag with this skirt suit were definitely a choice, though.
I know this is the look everyone has been gagging over but it didn’t win me over as much as it did everyone else. If this dress looks familiar to you, it’s because Britney Spears wore it in 2002. On Britney it was floor length, and I think that was a bit more effective, as here on Blake it hits at an awkward spot, and also makes it feel less like a red carpet look. It’s a lovely dress and it’s very Versace, but I’m just not obsessed.
I actually much preferred her in this Versace mini. Simple, but hot and fun.
This is actually kind of stunning. The crystals on that dress are so incredibly done and the florals here are subtle, but so lovely. I don’t mind the red feathered cape at all. It’s a lot, but it works.
This is a lot, but it doesn’t work.
- Cate Blanchett reminding us that she always eats with a custom spoon top by Hodakova.
- I love Addison in this cone bra and think her wearing the collection in collaboration with Lotta Volkova makes a lot of sense for her brand, but there were so many different ways we could have styled this? Like the lookbook was full of moments that scream Addison to me.
- Very beautiful dress! The embroidery is very Miu Miu and the dress is tailored well.
Sydney wearing full Chloé Fall 2024 in these paparazzi shots is obviously very gorg, but also feels very forced. I do love Chloé for her, though. Let’s work on this.
So that was this week! I’m sleepy and need to go walk around my apartment a little bit as per my recovery instructions.
TTYL!!!
