Itty bitty one this week.
I’m in this weird place, where, I write, here, for myself, but I also write things I don’t always want to write about for work, and I wouldn’t call it burnout, but it’s something. The thing is, I would be writing this newsletter whether there was no one reading it or whether there was thousands, but I’d love to do more than just the weekly’s more often, but I don’t have the time or the willpower, and I don’t get paid for this, because my reach and relevancy isn’t enough for anyone to want to pay for it, you know? I think I do things all the time, just because I love doing them, and they make me feel like I have purpose, but I just wish other people were aware and the growth wasn’t so, so slow. I just have so many ideas I want to execute, but can’t at this stage. So, I do love all of y’all that give me the time of day, mean it.
Anyway, let’s get into it.
- Anya Taylor-Joy for Variety; The dress. THE DRESS! It’s Cheney Chan, and I don’t understand why Variety never lists the credits. Styled by Ryan Hastings.
- Kendall Jenner for Vogue; The creative direction of this editorial feels all over the place. I know the running joke with Kendall is that she gives us nothing, and I agree! However, there’s some shots here, the ones that are almost a bit hyperrealistic, that feel like an old Victoria’s Secret catalog, and I’m kind of into them? If the whole shoot was like that, I think there’d be something here. There’s also just too many photos, for the same expression, over, and over again. Styled by Tabitha Simmons.
- Zendaya for Vogue Australia; This is definitely the most stripped down Zendaya editorial we’ve gotten in a while, so there aren’t any insane looks or photos, but for some reason that makes sense to me for Vogue Australia. I don’t know. Styled by Law Roach.
- This Gucci campaign is SO dull. I believe Jannik Sinner is the first Wimbledon player to not carry a white duffle onto the court, but, so what, and also! The Nike logo getting all that free press from Gucci? Is there a collab coming?
- Cute little custom Vivienne Westwood set on Kenny. I like the lace, I like the cut, it’s good!
She also wore Givenchy’s SS1997 by Alexander McQueen, and I don’t have to tell you that it’s stunning.
- A Bieber baby is coming, and Hailey wore custom Saint Laurent to announce it! The white lace is so cheeky, because white is associated with purity, but then it’s also entirely sheer lace. It’s simple, but it makes sense for Hailey and it makes sense for Anthony Vaccarello.
- I started furiously nodding my head when I realized Anya and Taylor Russell are styled by the same person, because suddenly everything made sense. I love that Anya has been playing into the Furiosa of it all without being all too on the nose about it. This Balmain piece naturally reminds me of Alexander McQueen and Shaun Leane’s breastplate, that we just talked about in the Met Gala review, when looking at Paloma Elsesser. I mean, it’s great! She looks like a perfume bottle. Not the most riveting look out of all of Olivier’s sculpted moments, but still fun in its impracticality.
This Robert Wun look was so hot. It has those signature Robert Wun House codes with the BDSM straps and structured shoulders, however it’s a lot more casual than what we’re used to seeing from him, and I’m into it.
Acne Studios has been confusing to me as of late, but this little leather mini is hot. The leather looks like butter on her, and I like that the hems are a bit tattered— it feels more appropriate for the promotion of the movie. I’ve seen people say they’re getting tired of method dressing, but, if you’re boring, just say that!
- So Ariana Grande wore Maison Margiela Spring 2024 Couture to perform at the Met Gala, and I know I give people so much shit for wearing this collection and never letting it live up to its full potential, but… I loved this for her. Hear me out! She may have not been giving broken doll, but that’s fine! Instead she gave us secret garden, and it worked! She made the look make sense for her, but didn’t get rid of its magic.
- Cynthia Erivo joined her during that performance, giving us a lil bit of a Thom Browne Fall 2013 deep cut, and I’m obsessed. I like that it kind of tied in the look we saw her wear on the red carpet, and I also like that they swapped green and pink for this performance.
- See, now here’s someone wearing Maison Margiela Spring 2024 Couture in a way that pisses me off. She already didn’t have the full look on in that photo where she’s posing like a doll, but then she stripped it down even more to make it look like every other thing she’s ever worn. I feel like it’s one thing to have a specific sense of style, and another to strip a brand of all its brand-ness. I also don’t think she’s cool enough to pull this off— there I said it.
So that was this week! This morning I drove to a bakery to pick up pastries for my mom, because it’s mother’s day, and I didn’t pee before I left because I had a hoodie on over my jumpsuit and didn’t feel like taking it all off, so by the time I got home I thought my bladder was going to combust, and now I’ve been peeing so much all day, so.
TTYL!!!
