Thank god almost nothing happened this week, because between my actual job, the Challengers costume review, the 2024 Met Gala theme breakdown, and the Kendrick Lamar x Drake beef, I have not been able to take a single breath, reader.
Anyway, let’s get into it.
- Required Reading: Law Roach for The New York Times. Literally, at no point in this interview could I have guessed what was coming next.
- I clicked the tags in this post and noticed that Dua was styled for Jahleel Weever for SNL performance, and now I have to know, is he her new stylist? Were they just working together for this? Will he be styling her AND Rihanna?
- Kind of obsessed with this. I love that it looks like the outfit she was perhaps meant to wear is sticking out of the suitcase. This is a look that is really all about the gesture of it all, you know?
- Anne Hathway wore a full leather, Ralph Lauren SS2015 look on one of the hottest days we’ve had in NYC this year, so far. For that alone, I must approve.
But what I really loved to see from Anne this week was this custom Versace dress. I mean?! PWAHHHH. You can always count on Versace to cut a waist, but I also think the piping here is really brilliant in shaping the body. The bust area is interesting and the way all these pieces fit together is like a puzzle perfectly snapping into place. I also feel like it’s referencing the bust of this look from SS1995.
- I love that Sarah Paulson is always willing to go for it, and you know I willingly drink the The Row Kool-Aid, but I just wish this was a touch shorter. I also just feel like there’s something missing in the structure of the neckline here, that was very much present on the runway.
- Miss Bella Hadid is back, and has been stepping OUT while promoting her new perfumes. First, here she is wearing Christian Dior SS2004 by John Galliano, and while I do think it’s missing a bit of styling and personality, it is sweet. Also, she’s styled by Molly Dickson now??
I stand by the fact that Gucci feels very sterile and lifeless right not, but listen, this fits well and it’s cute. I don’t have all that much to say about it. I think it would have been better with a different shoe. I don’t mind the platform or that Gucci monogram, but they don’t make sense to me here.
Then she wore ROKH with vintage Chanel sandals. Random, but okay!
The Roberto Cavalli SS2003, though?!
AND THE YVES SAINT LAURENT SS1999 COUTURE?! These last two, but especially the last one, are my favorite, and also feel like most referential to the perfume campaigns we’ve seen for her perfumes. Oh, but this really is beautiful. The way the sleeves loop into this little bubbled cape? Stunning.
- Anya-Taylor Joy in archive Paco Rabanne was most pleasing to ME. Here she is at the Sydney premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which is an apocalyptic sci-fi movie, and so I couldn’t think of a more perfect designer to wear for the premiere. In the 60s, there was a lot of innovation and social movements happening, and futurism had a huge moment in fashion, especially with designers like Paco Rabanne and Pierre Cardin. Rabanne used a lot of non-traditional materials, like glass, metal, plastic, and paper to create garments, which is what we see here. His chain mail clothes felt looked like armor sometimes, which feel fitting for this movie. They also kind of remind of the spiked cars in Mad Max.
- Anok Yai wearing archive Dior? From her closet?! We love a collector! I saw someone say this was custom, and I was like, lmao, there is no way Maria Grazia Chiuri turned this out, are y’all okay? I hope she goes to the Met Gala this year because she was one of my favorites last year.
- Lewis Hamilton loves a matching jacket and pants, and I’m not mad at it— especially when it’s custom Marc Jacobs and is a clear reference to Marc’s work on the runway. We saw these pailettes as recently as the Spring 2024 collection, and I just think it’s really smart when custom looks are identifiable.
- Whoever dressed Emily in this, hates her. That seem in the front is giving me vertigo. Honestly, what you get for wearing Dolce.
Let’s end on a good note, with Tracee Ellis Ross wearing the most delicious look from Dries Van Noten Fall 2024. The textures! The colors! I die.
So that was this week. I’m sorry you’ve heard from me so much over the past few days, but see you again on like Tuesday, probably, to talk Met Gala<3
TTYL!!!
