I’ve been convinced to do a review. Most of these looks could be summed up by saying, “it’s fine.” I am going to try my best not to do that. Listen, these are probably my most subjective posts, and while I do make a serious comment here and there about tailoring or garment construction, these are deeply unserious, so let’s all relax before we begin.
Anyway, let’s get into it.
This is a very nice Thom Browne suit. If you’re going to do basic black suit, at least make it immaculate, you know? This broach on the lapel is fine— I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be a nod to The Brutalist, but it’s not giving me brutalism very much.
I’ve seen Nicole Kidman wear this in blue and I’ve seen Ariana Grande wear it in pink, so I’m kind of good on it. Also! They both had tights and shoes that matched the color of the dress, whereas Ali went with black to match the gloves and it’s taking me out of the experience a bit.
Let me start by saying that when him and Kerry Washington were presenting and he put his glasses on and adjusted his unbuttoned shirt (slut), I thought he was doing a bit, because Kerry was talking about actors who really get into character. Nope, just being sexy. Anyway, I’m going to choose to believe the diabolical split hem is to prevent him from being too powerful. They knew we wouldn’t be able to handle it.
I want to like this but the pants. It’s the pants right? Something is wrong here. I think it’s the pants. Lovely color, though! Can we also talk about how GOOD Ripley was?! I can’t believe he hasn’t won anything for that.
The second I saw this dress on the runway, I knew it was going to end up on a red carpet. I like that the girls gave us the glitz and glam last night, truly, and I don’t hate this, but. like most of what I’ve seen from Seán’s McQueen so far, it just doesn’t make me feel much of anything. I really enjoy the way the hemline and sleeves look like they’re decomposing and tattering, and I think seeing a bit of that erosion around the neckline would have been quite lovely. On the runway there was a headpiece that I think helped make the look and it made the neckline irrelevant, but here, that is not the case!
Kind of obsessed with this, actually. All the column gowns last night were a millimeter too long, but this one’s the best we got. As far as Dior looks go, this is very good. The structure oft he top is stunning, and the back of it has belted straps running down, which adds to the utilitarian, breast plate feel of it. Also! It’s all leather.
Archive pulls for the sake of archive pulls have always been a tired idea to me. With that being said, I do think this is a really beautiful slip dress— you know John’s always going to fuck up a bias cut! with that being said, nothing I’ll be thinking too hard about after I finish writing this.
Why would you do me like this and make me slowly slip into psychosis, thinking about how this was her subtle way of telling us she’s playing Audrey Hepburn in a biopic. Lmao, no but, I know Glinda loves a yellow and there’s the whole yellow brick road of it all, but can I be honest… the fit of this is very bizarre. You know calling something flattering or not is never something I’m interested in, so that’s not what I mean. I just don’t think this is meant to look like this, and this dress has got some years on it, so I know there’s only so many adjustments you’re allowed to make, but.
My favorite thing is when someone wears something more casual to an event and makes everyone else look overdressed. Ayo is obviously referencing Julia Roberts here and doing an incredible job, while also referencing Loewe’s Spring 2025 Menswear collection effortlessly. Obsessed with the feather tie, and I don’t even mind the Loewe branding at the gathering of the pants. It kind adds to the casualness of the suiting to me, in that it makes me think of brand labels on jeans.
Oh, absolutely!! Cate actually wore this dress at the Cannes Film Festival a few years ago, and I love that she continues to rewear her dresses. The only difference is the added embellishment to the chest; originally the crystals were only on the shoulders. This dress really is beautiful, and to make it all the more impressive, that gold color is all beading. She said, you can keep your golden globes, I’ll just be one!
I’m very confused, because I remember liking this when I saw this in the lookbook, but here it’s… clunky? There was also a big pussybow originally, which I would have loved to see on Chris. I do appreciate Chris always trying something new and fun, though.
I can always count on Colman to never disappoint me. A very simple suit, but then we get into all the accessories and the polkadot shirt, and suddenly something so familiar and classic has been given a new life!
I know this is his first big awards ceremony, and so he’s giving us serious actor suiting, but I feel like he usually has a bit more fun, so I obviously would have loved to see that here. The break in the pant is fine, and the jacket fits well.
Smiling at my screen every time I see Cynthia in this dress! She is beauty, she is grace. Louis Vuitton really loves Cynthia, because pwahhh. Tailored to perfection, and this silvery, floral lace is divine. You already know I love a pannier, and this take on it is so light and dreamy. Cynthia also mentioned how this dress was a nod to Elphaba’s hat, and I just love, love, love, so much.
Well, we obviously don’t love that it’s Dolce, but all things considered, it’s nice and this color looks incredible on her. Though I bet Versace wouldn’t have let whatever’s happening under the bust area happen.
I enjoy his red carpet style very much! I love how black velvet just feels like black hole. Very dapper.
The fabrics in the neckline make it almost look like a 3D structure which is quite intriguing. It’s not my personal cup of tea, but it is a beautifully constructed gown and I’m very happy for Demi.
Harry Lambert and Eddie Redmayne are one of my favorite pairings. This is so fun! The break in the pant is perfect, and I love the color (and collar) of that shirt.
This dress is based on one from 1953, I believe, and generally, I do love this big ballgown and the “Hollywood glamour” of it all. I know the leopard print is part of the archive reference, but the severity of it is throwing me off a little here. Regardless, I think it’d be fun to see Olivier channel this energy a bit more, and to see how he’d make it modern and fresh.
I don’t hate this, and I very much enjoy the handkerchief collar— definitely something Seán should develop as a house code— but the sleeves are long in a way that doesn’t feel intentional enough.
See what I mean about the column dresses needing to be a millimeter shorter? Other than that, this would have been a very sweet and simple look from Louis Vuitton. I like this half bow on the waist and I like how the structure of the skirt looks like someone is blowing air into it from below.
Very confused as to why not more people are talking about Felicity Jones in this Prada look, based on Spring 2025. Very fun play with embroidery and I just love the unapologetic ostentatiousness of it. Those larger paillettes are especially compelling and really embody the collection this is based on by feeling like a reflection of the time, while also feeling like algorithmic black holes.
Messy. Very disappointing look from Armani and is one of those moments where there is so much happening without anything happening at all. I’m sure this is meant to feel nonchalant, but…
Always here for a Jeff Goldblum fashion moment. Jeff is giving us a little bit of Emerald City art deco with this jacket and I’m into it. I think the pants are tailored well and perfectly flared and I like all the little brooches.
Our number one boy said, “I’ve been accused of always wearing brown” so instead he gave us the mint toothpaste special, and you know what? Hell yeah. Except that actually, the hat and sunglasses are taking me OUT.
Very simple, but so clean and perfect. I do wish the center was closed all the way up to the top just so that it was very precise and streamlined, but regardless, very nice.
I did not know until the day of the Golden Globes that, not only did Saint Laurent Productions produce Emilia Pérez, but Anthony Vaccarello worked with the costume designer as well. Which, looking back now, can definitely see some Vaccarello-isms. Regardless, Sofía said that she wanted to wear the Buddhist colors here, and I do think the colors are lovely, I actually love when Anthony Vaccarello experiments with colors, but the draping looks a little pulled to me here.
A lot of people hated this, but I think the draping here is done well. If anything, it looks exactly the way Demna intended it to and is very identifiably him. It’s just a very lukewarm look for me.
If my only understanding of Sabato de Sarno’s Gucci was all the things Kirsten Dunst has worn from it, then I’d think he was incapable of doing wrong. This is so simple, but so sleek, so sexy, and just so cool.
I’ll never get tired of a Versace oroton chainmail and this citrusy experience is no exception. It is actually insane how they manage to make metal look this buttery smooth.
You know what, I’ll take it. She’s worn me down! The trauma of looking at all her Chanel looks has made me soft.
I always love seeing what Matty wears. A fashion boy! I really enjoy the subtle nudie suit feel of this, all the way down to the star studded shoes!
This was the only Balenciaga look of the night that I really, truly enjoyed. It looks like the dress is about to swallow her up, and the collar just tickles her face in the most perfect way.
The last Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta red carpet moment we’ll ever get. Is it anything absolutely bonkers? No, but it is a very beautiful column gown and I’m not sure if these golden fish scales are all enameled sequins or leather, but either way, stun.
Miley is very cool and hot so she makes everything look very cool and hot, but this is not great. The silver piping feels messy, especially as it connects tot he back strap, and the cutout is awkward.
I’ve really enjoyed seeing all Monica’s looks while doing press for A Complete Unknown, but this falls flat for me. It’s very much MGC’s Dior (derogatory). Listen, it fits well, the embellishments are sweet, the draping and pleating are nice, but it’s just very boring and that waist seam is such an eyesore.
The fit of this is sickening, but I just wish we’d done sheer fabric all the way down, instead of this severe cut to oroton— it just doesn’t make sense.
Again, a very lukewarm moment by Balenciaga. The illusion mesh on the back isn’t illusion enough, and the draping of the dress isn’t anything to run home about. Her hair is more interesting than the dress.
If she loves simple, I love that for her, but the draping of the bust area is so messy.
This is the best Quinta has looked in a long time. The color is stunning and the dress is tailored to perfection. I also love this baked in sequin that Rodarte does— it creates the most delicious texture.
I personally wish the top and bottom felt more dress than two separate pieces, but the fit is incredible and these two shades of green are delicious.
I would love this so, so very much if the pants had a touch less fabric. I’m all here for a skinny pant, but not if it looks like it doesn’t have enough space.
Do you know how long I spent trying to find a photo of this look. I kept seeing her on screen and knew this was going to be one of my favorite looks of the night. I love the construction of this and how she almost looks like an origami figurine. The twisted off the shoulder detail is lovely, and I’m always here for those weird, rectangular Prada trains.
I was so enchanted by this dress the moment I saw this. The way these sequins are draped and twisted is incredibly compelling and just creates the coolest effect. Very cool and very good design.
Imagine anyone else making Chanel look THIS good. She’s insane.
This is our first look at Haider Ackermann’s Tom Ford, and while I don’t hate it, I’m not as gagged as I would like to be. I like the sparkle in the suit jacket, and the tie definitely feels like something Haider would explored, but Timmy has also been wearing a lot of scarves while promoting A Complete Unknown, so.
Viola actually wore this to the LACMA Art + Film Gala a couple of months ago, but here they added some rainbow strands to her cape. I loved it then and I love it now. Stunning.
I mean, imagine her ever looking bad? With this look, Zendaya and Law were channeling iconic Black Hollywood stars, and naturally, the dress also makes me think of Charles James’ butterfly dress. I think this is very lovely— it’s simple, but still feels technical in the way that Nicolas’ Louis Vuitton always tends to. There’s obviously a bit of puckering below the corset, but in videos I saw of Zendaya, she obviously knew that and knew how to adjust herself to kind of distract from that or hide it, so.
It’s nice, I just don’t have anything to say about it.
Again, simple, but I do love the glamour of this and I love a brown.
So that was the Golden Globes. The heating in my apartment is fucked up and my landlord is an idiot so I am wearing shorts and a sports bra with all the windows open in JANUARY.
TTYL!!!
