You guys, there was a lot of really good fashion aft the golden globes this year— even from Dior! With that being said, although I was mainly gasping from pleasing surprises, I was also gasping from fear occasionally. Listen, we can’t ever expect everyone to get it right.
Anyway, let’s get into it.
I know I said even Dior gave us good looks this year, but this was not one of them. The dress itself isn’t terrible, but it is extremely boring. I will say, the draping on the bodice is done really nicely, and I like that we still managed to create some shape in the waist without the use of a stupid little belt or seam. However, that one, braided, off the shoulder moment feels so incredibly pointless and out of place.
There was so much Dolce on this red carpet, it pissed me off. What are we doing, people?? I’ve spoken about this before in more detail, but I understand how appealing it is when a brand is offering you a free custom dress and giving you that VIP treatment, but the looks are rarely ever worth working with them. Brand aside, I do think this fits her nicely and it’s tailored well. The color is kind of gorgeous, but I’m not obsessed with the embroidery, the sequins are messy at the neckline, and I don’t understand why we had to make the straps a different color.
I don’t really care about celebrity culture, however there are a few people that I feel like I would become best friends with if we ever met, and Andrew Scott is one of them. Anyway, I like that Andrew usually plays with traditional menswear suiting a little bit, and I think this full white moment is great. I also think the simple chain works really nicely with the more casual tank top underneath. If I’m really being picky, I’d make the pants just an itty bit longer, and then this look would be perfect.
See! Look how quickly we’re seeing another Dolce look. We should not be putting ANGELA BASSETT in Dolce & Gabbana. This women should be able to get a custom look from anyone. It’s a simple velvet dress, and since it’s so simple, the least it could do is fit perfectly, which it doesn’t; the sleeves are too long and there’s puckering in the waist.
Here’s the thing, I do like this. I love that she opted for something other than a traditional gown, and this makes a lot of sense being Saint Laurent, since the brand made the Le Smoking popular and pushed suiting for women. I love a cummerbund, and placing it around the waist is very smart— I like the way it takes a menswear piece and uses it in a feminine way. The unbuttoned shirt to create a plunge is good, but I do wish the pants were a smidge shorter. Like I said, I do like this, but there’s just something missing from it to make sense for the Golden Globes to me; I’d have her wear this to something like a premiere or a talk show.
Y’all already know Ayo is a fashion girly, and while I do think this is very signature Prada and it is sweet, it’s hard for anything to have compared to Hunter Schafer’s Prada look. I find myself comparing this one to hers even more than the rest, because they both use organza in some way, however here it’s a lot more minimal, and I think it’s just a touch messy around the bust area, especially because it feels like it’s fighting with the curves seam under the bust.
Barry likes to have a little bit of fun with his fashion, which I appreciate, but sometimes it needs a little bit of editing. I believe this is from Pharrell’s debut collection for the brand, and you’ll notice a lot of brooches and jewelry by Tiffany’s featured in his work. This is interesting to me, since Pharrell himself wears a lot of Tiffany jewelry, but also because the styling makes me think of his relationship with Chanel. Either way, I think the jewelry is fun, and I also love the jacket. If you look at the lapel, you’ll notice that the damier print on it lines up perfectly, so there’s no brake in the squares— delicious. I love a heeled boot, but those pants are bunching far too much. If there was one break, I could handle it, but this just looks messy.
It’s been cool to see Bella exploring their sense of style this past year, and they seem to have pretty good taste! I like this little Prada moment. The colors are great, and it feels very Raf to me. I don’t mind everything being a different color or the shoes being black, because that feels right to me for Prada, but I do think the shoes are too heavy for the look. Other than that, I’m not mad at it!
Here we have my first best dressed of the night! You guys know I stan Willy Chavarria, and I think his designs make so much sense with Billie’s style. He often pulls from streetwear and Chicano culture while subverting ideas of the masculine and feminine, and Billie also subverts people’s expectations of what it is that she should be wearing. This oversized style is very Billie, but it’s also very Willy. I love the way the skirt is pleated to look like a pair of oversized shorts, and the little red sock, the heel, and peter pan collar with ribbon add such a sweet touch to the look overall.
A pretty, pretty dress! Miuccia loves a good skirt, and I love when we get these bell shaped skirts from Prada. This dress is such a gorgeous color, and is really beautifully structured. I love the way the sleeves taper down and have that same architectural feel as the rest of the dress. There is something a little bit off to me about the fit of the bust area at the neckline, but other than that it’s stunning.
What the fuck was happening over at Miu Miu when they decided this was worthy of being worn. It does have a youthfulness to it that is associated with the brand, and the silhouette makes sense with the Priscilla of it all, but it’s not good. That sheer corset in the center feels so incredibly out of place, and the way the bust area tucks into it is messy. I also don’t like that I can see through at the hemline because the underskirt doesn’t line up with the hemline.
Although the most tame, this was my favorite Schiaparelli look of the night. It’s a reissue of a dress designed by Elsa in 1949, and it’s stunning. I love Daniel Roseberry’s Schiaparelli, but sometimes I get a little bored of seeing the gold and the structure and the embellishment of it all, especially when celebrities are rarely ever selling you on the look. I’m not asking to see exact replications like this one exclusively, but I think there’s a way to incorporate those bare bones, house codes and styles in a way that is still surreal and fun, but in a more refined and pulled back way. This dress is just refreshing to see from the brand, and I love the way it’s ruched in the center— it kind of makes me think of a lobster tail. Then we have this crystal bust area just so subtly peaking out, and it’s just stunning.
More best dressed!! Celine Song, the director of Past Lives, is wearing a custom Loewe look based on the Spring 2024 collection, and I’m obsessed. This is a great example of Jonathan Anderson bringing a bit of intrigue to something so mundane. It’s essentially just a plain skirt suit, but then we have this large pin running through the waistline, which feels like such a fun play into tailoring and what actually goes into tailoring something. I also think it’s sweet that Celine is wearing Loewe, and as we know Greta Lee is a Jonathan Anderson darling.
Charles Melton, the man you are! You’ve heard me talk about how often when actors move on from their teenage roles to something more “serious” their styling follows, and I feel like that’s what this is. However, the suit does fit really nicely and he just looks like THE Hollywood star. I like the play with navy and black, since that’s seen as a fashion taboo, but even though Charles’ style is on the simpler side, he has worn some more interesting things in the recent past. Regardless, he looks like a star.
Not his best! Cillian is also quite simple with his fashion and Anthony Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent is simple, but this is messy. While I like the stiff, starched collar, the shirt feels very bizarrely tucked in. I believe the suit is velvet, which is nice, but the pants bunch at the ankle in a strange way, and don’t fall nicely over the boot.
Just like with Barry’s look we have those broaches, which again, I think are nice. I like the military style of the jacket and I think the pants fit a lot better with this Louis Vuitton look. I will say, the arms could use a bit more fabric because they’re a smidge tight, but other than that, it’s a nice menswear look!
This was one of the first looks I saw of the night, and I teared up at how stunning it was. While a little different for Rodarte, it still feels cohesive with things we’ve seen from the brand. This sequin, shell bust is stunning, and the peplum is done perfectly. It fits her incredibly, and I just hope we see this kind of energy from more houses when it comes to dressing women that aren’t the stereotypical sample size.
Danielle worked with Gabriella Karefa-Johnson in putting this look together, which makes sense since Gabriella was one of the stylists that guest designed Moschino’s last show. Gabriella said she was doing research on the pioneering Black women of Hollywood that came before, as well as Zelda Wynn Valdes, who invented the fit and flare. I love this look conceptually and think people like Gabriella are so important so that we see more representation and inclusivity in fashion, however I do think that this dress could fit a lot better. Moschino is known for being kooky and crazy, but that doesn’t mean the craftsmanship suffers because of it. This dress is quite simple for Moschino, so the main focus should be making sure it fits perfectly.
The construction of this is incredible. I need everyone to do a quick zoom in on the pleating at the top of the trumpet skirt— I’m drooling. The bodice is snatched and the embroidery obviously plays off of the iconic Schiaparelli skeleton dress. The back of the dress was laced up and had stunning gold grommets running down it entirely. I do think she looked great, but I also wish the dress had just fully been a velvet.
Honestly, not bad for Dior. It isn’t incredibly memorable, but I like that, once again, we didn’t default to waist seams or belts to define the waist in any of the looks we saw from them this night. It’s also smart to continue the sequins off of the gown and into the straps so that it looks like the strap is just that string of sequins. She’s also wear Dior fine jewelry, featured roses, and I don’t know if this is intentional, but Elizabeth plays Princess Diana in The Crown, and Princess Diana is obvi British, and the rose is the flower of England, so that’s a nice touch.
I swear to god, I have no clue what this woman’s personal style is at all, because she always wears the randomest shit. Honestly, I don’t think I want to know what her personal style is if this is any representation of it. Before I knew this was Westwood, my guess was Dolce, since it’s a mess. If I was the design team at Vivienne Westwood, you couldn’t torture it out of me that this came from my hands.
How incredibly lovely. Elle Fanning is a fashion girl, and I feel like she has a real appreciation for archival pieces and fashion history. I remember her once having the costume designer for The Great design a red carpet look for her, which was so sweet. This Pierre Balmain dress from the 1960s has a beautiful bell shaped skirt, and I love the way the bow on the bust area isn’t just a bow placed on top, but instead has the fabric wrap around and tie itself, which is why you see one side open and floppy. She looks stunning.
This is simple for Louis Vuitton, but it’s a really lovely dress. The same way Poor Things blends Victorian style with sci-fi, we see Nicolas Ghesquière blend period styles with more contemporary and futuristic styles at Louis Vuitton. Here we have that in the modern style of dress paired with the floral embroidery. There’s also something about the dress and the embroidery both being very pale that’s compelling. Have we seen more interesting things from Louis Vuitton? Sure, but this is still really nice.
This feels like it’s trying and failing to be Schiaparelli. I’m fine with the top of this dress, but the skirt is horrid and makes no sense. Fantasia has been serving looks recently, but I’ve also seen her in Dolce far too often, so let’s fix that.
Same shit, nothing new. Yes, it’s in the signature Valentino red and rosettes are a house code, but Florence wears the same thing in a different font over and over again, and I’m tired.
There is vulvas all over this skirt, which is fun since Gillian plays a sex therapist in Sex Education. This is also a brand for women, by a women, so it feels correct. I think this fits her really beautifully and I like the frayed hemline.
Oof. You know I’m not a huge fan of Kim Jones’ Fendi, but I also give credit where credit is due. This is making me want to take back anything nice I’ve ever said. There is no reason a dress this simple should be over designed. The draping is a mess and is trying way too hard. Also, who thought those bunchy gloves were a good idea?
Obviously one of my best dressed of the night. I had to show you this dress from all angles because it’s incredible. It’s actually based on Loewe’s Fall 2020 collection, and Greta ate this right up. From the front, it’s seemingly a simple, bias cut dress, but then in the back it cascades down into this comforter of a skirt and has an open back, and I’m obsessed. There’s also something about Greta’s hair paired with the dropwaist of the dress that feels very, classic 1930s Hollywood.
Very pretty! It’s tailored beautifully and I love the way the darts add a bit more definition to the waist. I’m not sure, but I don’t think she’s actually wearing a necklace, I think it’s a trompe l’oeil necklace created by embroidering the dress, and that’s great. The gloves work for me here and you know I love those Prada trains.
This is THE Prada look of the night. Everyone say thank you to Dara Allen, Hunter’s stylist, for continuing to do god’s work; her mind is unparalleled. This gown is based on the Spring 2024 collection, and was such a smart dress to turn into more of an evening wear style. This organza attached to both the front and back of the dress has such beautiful movement when there’s wind, and she looks like the most enchanting, gossamer, ghost I’ve ever seen. This is for sure making my best dressed of 2024 list and we’re only two weeks into the year!
While this dress isn’t for me, I can appreciate the craftsmanship, and I think the embroidery is done in a very smart way. You can see it creating a focal point on the waistline, as well as creating this faux off the shoulder moment, which is intriguing.
How boring.
Again, how boring. JLaw has been quite minimal with her fashion as of the No Hard Feelings press run, but this draped velvet dress just isn’t memorable.
I’m sure everyone is aware that Jeremy is the new face of Calvin Klein, so in that regard, it makes sense that he’s wearing the brand. However, since when is Calvin doing custom?? Is this something we’re going to see more regularly from them? I need answers. Anyway, this is boring. I can appreciate the sheer shirt underneath trying to spice things up, but it’s not enough for the lukewarm suit. Imagine he pulled up in something from the archives? Hot.
I really need answers as to why we’re seeing so much Givenchy since it was announced that Matthew Williams was leaving his position as creative director. ALSO, the looks haven’t been bad? LMAO. Anyway, I’m not mad at this, it’s simple, but it’s tailored really nicely, and it feels very easy breezy. You know I hate the black shoe, though. Andrew wore a white shoe, he figured it out.
Julia has been a Gucci girl for a long time, and it’s been interesting to see which celebrities are continuing to work with Gucci even after Alessandro left. It makes me think of the people who had a relationship with the brand generally speaking, and those who did it for Alessandro. It’s also interesting to see what celebrities Sabato de Sarno will continue to choose to align with this new era of Gucci. With all that being sad, I don’t mind this overall dress and I think it’s tailored well, but it’s nothing incredibly memorable. Also, the sequins on the top feel different from the sequins on the bottom, and not in a quirky Alessandro Michele for Gucci way, but in a way that feels extremely pointless here.
This is a nice gown. I like the neckline and it’s molded to the waist beautifully, but it doesn’t have the same magic that a lot of the Bottega pieces we see on the runway do.
Just Lenny Kravitz being hot, as usual. No, but, I do like this jumpsuit, and how it looks like a blazer tucked into a pair of trousers. Not only that, but there’s also some fun little cutouts on the side, creating an open back. It’s a very Lenny Kravitz look, and I know we’ve seen iterations of this multiple times already, but I’m not mad at it.
Y’all know Lily is my new favorite fashion girl, and while I do think she looks beautiful here, it’s just not my favorite look compared to all the other wonderful things we’ve seen her wear recently. There’s nothing wrong with it and I love how this ruffled cape frames her, but it’s just not super memorable. She’s also wearing earrings by Blackfeet artist, Ermineskin Cree, which I think is a lovely touch.
I know people are tired of all her Barbie looks, but we still have the Oscars, so, sit tight. Honestly, I love the Barbie reference, and I think they’re fun. When else is this going to happen, you know? We’re never going to see this women in pink again after the Oscars. Anyway, Margot is channeling the 1977 Superstar Barbie, and I do think Armani did a great job at recreating it. It’s not my favorite Barbie look, but I think the netted boa is fun and the color of that dress is stunning. The neckline of the dress feels very Armani to me, but I’m not obsessed with it. I’m literally begging for a Bob Mackie Barbie moment, though.
I can’t tell if the sequins are black or brown, but regardless this is nice. I love a good pussy bow blouse and I think everything fits really well, but I wont’ be thinking about it too hard tomorrow.
This look appears to be based on the Spring 2024 collection, and again, the runway just feels so much more compelling. This is a lovely gown, but there was something about it in a leather, with a banana leaf heel that was so striking.
This is really beautiful. Does it feel like Raf Simons’ Dior, but slightly deflated? Sure, but it’s tailored to perfection and she looks stunning. She’s giving you December up top and May on the bottom and I’m into it.
This dress is entirely beaded, and it fits incredibly. I can’t imagine that this is incredibly malleable, so to have it fit her waist that well is impressive. I love the peaked neckline and those clam earrings are scrumptious.
I get it, purple for The Color Purple, but surely we could have done something more interesting. It fits her perfectly and I like the extra texture provided by the shapes made by the beading, but it’s just boring.
This is also based on a look from the Spring 2024 collection, and I love this! I like that he didn’t go for a traditional menswear look, and I’m into this alphabet suit of a knit top. Also! He had “OUCH” spelled out on his nails, which is silly and fun and I love him. The pants fit well, and I’ve noticed he’s been matching his sling to his outfits, which, like, me af.
Who did this to Quinta? This feels like such an afterthought for Balmain. How are you going to give Elle the most stunning archival piece, but then leave Quinta this poorly fitted style we’ve already seen before. The sheer lining also isn’t a good color match for her, and I’m annoyed.
Oh, BITCH! If you told me I would be salivating over a Dior look this bad, I’d laugh in your face. This is stunning. Maria Grazia Chiuri loves a lace, and here it’s done really beautifully. I love a good crinoline skirt, and the netted lace on her décolletage ties in the fascinator perfectly. Speaking of the fascinator, MORE HEAD PIECES IN 2024!! This idea came about because Rosemund was in a ski accident and wanted to cover some bruising, and honestly, it was such a good move. She looks so striking.
This pajama style suiting seems to be something that Sabado is pushing at Gucci, and I’m not mad at it. Well, not always, Here I think it’s fine and I like that this white piping isn’t just on the shirt, but also on the jacket and pants.
Armani should have just did what they do best and given us a simple, beautifully fitted gown. Instead we got cutouts and draping and rosettes and asymmetry and tulle and chiffon and a belt. Imagine this top, no belt, column dress. Instead, it looks like each level was put through a randomized generator.
I don’t understand why Gucci wouldn’t reference something form their most recent collection? This isn’t obviously Gucci to me and it’s also just boring. At least it fits. Taylor’s fashion has been kind of tragic recently, so I’ll take what I can get, but I’ll do it while yawning.
This is signature Timmy suiting. It’s also Celine, so I’m not surprised at the simplicity and I like the the jacket is a little bit fun, but it’s not as good as some of the other looks he’s worn in the past. Also, the necklace feels out of place to me.
So that was the Golden Globes! Who were your favorites? Mind were Hunter Schafer, Great Lee, Billie Eilish, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Rosemund Pike. Worst had to be Selena Gomez, Quinta Brunson, Greta Gerwig, and anyone who wore Dolce & Gabbana.
TTYL!!!
