I don’t know how important the SAG Awards are if I’m being honest. Like I don’t know how major these outfits should be. As most awards shows go, this red carpet was quite underwhelming, and I am writing this as a seven year old, who has too much energy, is existing around me, so. We’re not feeling generous and kind.
I would die for the White Lotus cast, and I would kill to be on the show. Anyway, I’m happy that this suit fits well, but it’s just a plain black suit. There’s not much to say, and I want more from Adam.
I think this color is nice and I love when Prada does these trains— they’re so severe and blunt. However, I do think the hemming of this dress feels a bit rushed, and I wish it felt less bubbly and wrinkly.
Usually Ana’s Louis Vuitton looks are just boring, but this one is boring as well as ugly. The print feels very dated, the band around the waist is pointless, and the bows on the straps are distracting.
This is just a plain black suit with okay fitting pants. Also, while this appears to be all black, the lapels look like they’re a different shade of black from the rest of the suit and I can’t deal.
Angela Bassett did the thing! You know I had to throw that in there at least once. Anyway, it’s a tulle dress, and it isn’t the most groundbreaking tulle style, but it is fitted really well, and the color is stunning. I like that the center bodycon section appears to be a little bit sheer and I think the off-the-shoulder is sweet. I also really enjoy how her clutch looks like a seashell since the skirt has a mermaid tail. Listen, if you’re going to do tulle, Giambattista Valli is one of the brands you should turn to; this could have easily been a Christian Siriano disaster, you know?
Speaking of Angela Bassett doing the thing, isn’t this fitting? Generally this does fit well and I think the pants are tailored nicely, but I do with the jacket had been cut shorter for her, because here it does something funky to the proportions of her body. Ariana has had quite a week, so.
I’m starting to think that Ashley Park and Mindy share a wardrobe. Kidding! But kind of not really. There’s a lot happening here, but it’s saying nothing. The choice of slit and cape and embroidery and cutout underneath the embroidery is too much. You would think that hole cocktail of things would distract you from the creasing, but it doesn’t.
I knew this was Michael Kors the second I saw those delicious wet sequins. It’s Michael Kors, so we can expect it to be on the simpler side, which I’m not upset about. I love this cross halter top, and I admire the faith she has in it. Since there is so much happening up top in the cutout department, the slit in the skirt feels a bit too much for me, and would have worked better in the back.
Who told him this hand to face pose should be his go to? Anyway, I’m happy it’s not a plain black suit. I like the color and I’m always here for a three piece suit. I especially love the way Gucci has been making their waistcoats in this very scooped style. There is some pull around the groin area that could have been avoided, but other than that, I’ll take it.
This is so fun! You’re probably tired of me saying something is nothing crazy, but it’s nothing crazy. Regardless, it fits her great and is tailored to the exact millimeter— that skirt is floating. I also enjoy the drop waist and how the checkerboard print seems painted on instead of being very sharp and exact.
The way the lapels of the jacket cross over each other and appear to tuck into the other side is really wonderful. It adds a nice asymmetry to the jacket and is one of the most interesting things Virgil introduced during his time at the brand. However, the pants are too long and Barry just hasn’t hacked the shoe game yet. Why couldn’t we have done a white boot or something?
There was quite a few looks by Carolina Herrera at the SAG Awards, and this one is from the most recent Fall 2023 collection. I do thing it’s a nice all black look and has some dimension added to it with the different elements and fabrics. I think the sleek suit fits her beautifully and the skirt adds that traditional evening wear element, while playing with the iconic Carolina Herrera shirt tucked into belted skirt combo. Originally, the runway look had an additional rosette on the chest, but I think leaving it to just two works here and creates a nice scoop to the neckline.
Cate Blanchett has been rewearing a lot of looks she’s worn in the past recently, and while this isn’t a rewear, it does use leftover lace from a dress she wore by Armani too the 2014 Oscar’s. We love a sustainable queen! Usually Armani is more on the conservative side; Armani dresses the wife, Versace dresses the mistress and whatnot. But this is hot! It’s tailored well, the sequins are lovely, and the lace filling in the neckline and side cutouts is scrumptious.
This one's for all my girlies that grew up with this era of YouTube. I wish I had something nice to say, but other than the sweet color, there’s no other element of this that I enjoy. The dress itself is pretty forgettable, so you’d think making it fit would be the first priority. Instead, it’s very obvious that the dress is too long on her, and because of that the fabric has nowhere to go so it’s being pushed to bunch around her waist.
This is the best custom Louis Vuitton look I’ve seen in a long time, but the source material is obviously Christian Dior’s ‘Junon’ dress from FW1949, right? Anyway, I think the scalloping is wonderful, but wish it had either started at the waist, or would have been more of a gradual transition from the top instead of being such a severe line.
Eddie is wearing a look from the most recent Saint Laurent menswear collection, which was also arguably the the best menswear collection of the season. I mean, what’s not to love? It’s such a wonderful take on a classic menswear style. The thicker cotton gives the shirt a nice structure, and I love the take on a pussybow blouse. I like the higher waisted pant and we know I love a heeled boot. The pants are a little long, but it honestly doesn’t bother me here— they have enough fluidness to where it works. I feel like Eddie has been stepping out of his fashion comfort zone a little more recently, and I praise him and Harry Lambert for that.
This is from the most recent Spring 2023 Couture collection, and it could be a lot worse. It’s nothing memorable, but I suppose the velvet is draped nicely, it’s tailored well, and I like this olive color.
I don’t hate this but I also don’t love. We’ve been getting a lot of play on sheerness from Oscar de la Renta recently, and while this is a more subtle take on that, this panelling of the fabric is quite nice. I like how it’s not incredibly precise, but gets smaller as it gets to the waist. The flowers starting at the bottom and wrapping all the way up one strap is a nice touch and it’s tailored well. I also like how the flowers seem to be going in between the bands of fabric instead of just being placed right on top of the dress.
I don’t remember exactly what season this dress is from, but I do believe it’s from a Pre-Fall collection. Regardless, I think it fits Haley nicely, and I like that the pearls don’t just stop at the top and instead sprinkle all the way down the dress. It’s not groundbreaking, but I’m not mad at it.
This is from the most recent Spring 2023 Couture collection, and that collection was… rough. These slip dress styles were seen quite a bit throughout the collection, and sometimes they were fine, but most of the time I had heartburn looking at the photos of this collection, and this dress is making my throat a little spicy again. The silk over this very thick sequin skirt is strange, and the two strips of fabric falling down to the ground seem to have two bands that should go around the wrists? I don’t know.
While the girls are looking nice, something that no one seems to be able to get right recently, everything else is pretty forgettable. Also that one bangle around the wrist feels like it’s to tight for the fabric.
Jenna is wearing a vintage Versace dress from 1994, except originally the band she has around her waist was used as a strap on side of the neckline that sits a bit higher. While I do think it’s a nice Versace dress, I wish that band had in fact been a strap, because here it interferes with the draping. Is it the most interesting Versace look? No, but I love that Versace has been dipping into their archives a lot recently, and I like that Jenna seems to be having fun exploring her style, while still playing to her character.
My queen. I would like to thank everyone involved for not putting her in Dolce & Gabbana. Anyway, this is simple, but it’s Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, so it’s to be expected. Either way I think it’s a really lovely dress, it’s fitted to Jennifer beautifully, and I love how the ruching on the hips creates a really lovely shape to the waist. Saint Laurent unfortunately favors a sample size when they hand out looks, so it’s nice to see Jennifer in this. I’m also here for the headband— she looks super glam.
Jessica is giving us an asymmetrical, fuchsia, taffeta experience, and I will definitely forget about it tomorrow. Fits nice!
You can always count on Julia to give you a good Gucci fantasy. I’ve mentioned this before, but Gucci is currently in a state of limbo as they change creative directors. The custom looks seem to still be keeping Alessandro’s Gucci alive, while stripping it back just a touch. They've been incorporating chainmail into a lot of pieces recently, and I think the way it’s done here is really lovely, and almost makes Julia look like she’s wearing a shimmery fishnet top. The orange metallic silk is beautiful, and the way it’s pleated is really well done. I love the little fan shapes on the sleeves and bust area, as well as the draping and how it creates a nice shape on the waist without the need of a belt.
This was actually one of my favorite looks from the most recent Carolina Herrera collection. It’s simple, but it’s such a sweet look, and that bell skirt is done beautifully. I like the sheer tulle across the bust area, and it does remind me of a dress we’ve seen from Schiaparelli before. Having the tulle peak out from the bottom of the skirt also ties it in nicely.
I know damn well there was a better Fendi menswear look than this. Sylvia, what happened? Did you approve this? I appreciate the suit having a bit of texture and I’m not mad at a tank top underneath, but the fit of this suit is atrocious.
It’s rare, but it does happen. I love this Fendi dress. For this collection, I believe Kim Jones was exploring different fashion capitals, and these paneled chainmail dress were inspired by the Eiffel tower. It’s done really beautifully and fits well. I also think the undergarment chosen makes sense and doesn’t distract from the rest of the look.
If this had been just a touch shorter it would have been perfect. Listen, I know it’s simple, but it’s Ralph Lauren, what do you expect? Regardless, I think the crystal embellishment is beautiful, and this cutout almost dips into bumster territory in the back, so that’s hot. Is this a little bit of, is it fashion or is she just skinny? Yeah, but I don’t care.
The velvet bow creating a halter is sending me. I know that without it, it would have been a very simple dress, but it would have been a beautifully fitted simple dress. The bow feels like an afterthought and has the same energy as Maria Grazia Chiuri putting a skinny belt on everything.
So many Spring 2023 Couture and Fall 2023 Ready-To-Wear at the SAGs!!! Anyway, this isn’t my favorite Schiaparelli look. Essentially, it’s this velvet column dress with a beautifully fitted bustier, and then it has these strips of sequin fringe coming down the center. There were a lot of really beautiful choices in this collection, and this one is just a bit subpar compared to the rest.
A man after my own heart. After complaining about him wearing a plain suit to the BAFTAs, Paul is clearly trying to win me back by wearing Simone Rocha menswear. This is a look from the Fall 2023 collection, and Simone just started incorporating menswear last season. While it’s quite interchangeable, I’d argue that the menswear was stronger than the womenswear this season. Still, I have one complaint. This jacket with lovely little embroidery is made of a sheer tulle, and due to the fact that Paul is wearing a navy shirt, you can’t even tell it’s sheer, which kind of defeats the purpose, you know? A white shirt or just something lighter in color would have made more sense. Other than that, we love to see it!
I think this is Quinta’s best look yet. That waist is snatched and the dress is tailored to perfection. I like the neckline that this shell shaped bustier creates, and I think the beaded fringe skirt is lovely. Quinta seems to still be figuring out her red carpet style, but I think we’re headed in the right direction.
Rooney is wearing a dress from Spring 2016, and I think it’s beautiful. The lace is stunning, and the way it’s done in a mosaic style really is wonderful. I know it’s a bit long, but I think that works here— it makes it seem like this bird motif is melting right off of her.
Sheila is usually a Prada girl, but I love that she has taste even when she’s not in Prada. I’m a simple girl, I see Christopher John Rogers, I feel joy. This is such a fun look, because it has a lot of casual elements that are taken and made into an evening wear moment. The skirt has so much delicious texture; the draping, the ruffles, the large cuffed sleeves on the cape!!! I can’t take it. Then we have this simple bustier top to finish it off, and I love how the lining of it ties in the straps of the heels. We love.
There was a lot of this asymmetrical draping in the Fall 2023 collection, and for the most part I did like it and how it’s a nice alternative to a usual slit. However, here the taffeta is looking rough, and there’s a lot if crinkling interfering with that drape. I also wish that we couldn’t see the mini underneath the skirt.
Forget PP Pink, I want more of this yellow. I mean, this color looks incredible on her, and the fit of the dress is really nice. I like the curved neckline and the addition of the jeweled cuffs. Do I wish for something a little more interesting? Sure, but she still looks very nice.
I’ll be honest, saliva did in fact accumulate in my mouth as soon as I saw this look. I know the pants could fit better, but look at that jacket; FUCK. The line of the shoulder the lack of lapel, the way the line of the jacket follows the line of the collarless shirt?! I also think that the jacket has a really subtle nipping of the waist that is wonderful. This was probably just given to him as is, since you can even see that the sleeves are a bit long, but regardless, what a jacket.
Finally, we have what you’ve all been waiting for, Zendaya in custom Valentino. She’s wearing a strapless, duchess satin dress embroidered with 190 silk faille rosettes. I hate using the phrase “Old Hollywood” because it’s almost never used correctly, but that’s what I feel like the assignment was here. The color is really lovely and the rosettes are not only a wonderful touch, but also a part of the history of Valentino as a brand. The hair and jewelry compliment the dress perfectly as well, and while there is some creasing around the hip, which is unfortunate, it’s to be expected from a duchess silk.
She didn’t stop there! Next we got this fresh off the runway Armani moment that follows the same color story of the Valentino dress; we love a theme for the night. It’s Armani so it’s simple, but it’s Armani so you can also expect it to fit really wonderfully. I like how this diamond shape is not only seen on the bust area, but also in the cutout. Then the sequin carries onto this black lining that goes all the way down the skirt. Again, it’s nothing crazy, but she does look lovely.
So that was the SAG Awards! I’ll be honest, I skipped some because there’s only so many times that I can say “it’s nothing crazy” or “it’s not memorable.” Anyway, my best dressed goes to Sheila Atim, Eddie Redmayne, and Rooney Mara. Worst goes to Leo Woodall, Claudia Sulewksi, and Hong Chau. What did you think?
TTYL!!!
