There’s always the few people every year that absolutely turn it OUT, but overall I was kind of underwhelmed this year. I think that partially has to do with the fact that SAG-AFTRA recommended celebrities not wear characters from struck work, or at least try not to post about it, which did not stop Megan Fox, but we’ll get to that…
Anyway, I know this technically isn’t fashion, but Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I feel like I MUST discuss!
I apologize this won’t be in alphabetical order like reviews usually are, but first we have Kourtney Kardashian who dressed up as Kim from the 2013 PUNK: Chaos to Couture Met Gala. Also known as the look that people clowned so hard it made Kim cry, which is interesting since I think this is one of her best Met Gala looks. The hyperrealistic floral print? The lace up details? The sleeve into glove? The matching shoes? Riccardo Tisci made a dress ahead of its time, truly. Anyway, they need therapy, but this is brilliant. Also a great example that you don’t always have to do the most to get the best outcome.
Evan Mock made me giggle. He dressed up as the ‘I Like Turtles’ kid, which is a video that continues to withstand the test of time. I’m a sucker for a niche internet reference.

North dressed as the the bear from Kanye’s Graduation album, and my media literacy brain can’t help but find it interesting how Kim continues to reference her and her families iconography, or just people associated with them. I think it’s nice that North still seems to hold her dad in a positive light, but I also feel like Kim is trying to rewrite his public image, through her children, by referencing his greatest hits. Anyway, cute!
Kim and North also gave us a little Cher and Dionne from Clueless moment, and I do think this is cute. The costumes look spot on! Speaking of the costumes, I saw a magazine scan that said the original was JPG, but Kim said it was Dolce and that they remade it for her in the same fabric— who’s telling the truth?
Kim, Khloe, and friends also gave us a Bratz experience, which very much makes sense, but those tans are kind of sus. Also, I think it’s funny that they used prosthetic lips as if they look that much different.
Hailey Bieber dressed up as Carmen Electra’s character from Scary Movie, and I mean, if you’re gonna wear lingerie, this is the way to do it— you can tell that she really paid attention to the detail. I also think there’s something hereeee in terms of this character being kind of silly and dumb, and the way people perceive Hailey.
She also gave us Mean Girls, and really said fuck y’all! Honestly, she’s so funny for that second slide and I love it.
Then we got a Bieber’s couples experience as Pebbles and Bam Bam, but like, if they were going to a club in Berlin. It’s fine.
Kaia Gerber and Austin Butler dressed up as Edie Edgwick and Andy Warhol. I do think they did a good job and I think it’s a fun reference, but I’m sure we had the money for better wigs— Andy’s hair was crazy, but come on.
I know Kylie gave us Bride of Frankenstein last year with that insane JPG by Glenn Martens dress, but I still think Keke killed this. Also, the “He gave me LIFE.” caption had my lip quivering.
I also loved this Life-Size moment and can’t believe we haven’t seen this referenced more often! This was always once of my favorite movies. Anyway, I love Keke, so maybe I’m biased, but she was one of my favorites this year.
Paris Hiltons dressed as Britney Spears from the ‘Toxic’ music video makes very much sense. Objectively, this is one of the best pop songs ever written, and it’s also a Britney look that we don’t see referenced all that much.
Megan Fox and MGK dressed up as Gogo Yubari and The Bride from Kill Bill. I do think Megan looks great, and MGK looks like… that, but the SAG-AFTRA tag in the caption is such an eye roll.
According to Barbie, she was an injectable nurse from hell, and she looks so fucking good. I feel like every year we get so many celebrities dressing up as very specific characters, or other celebrities, and we get very little conceptual costume, so this is refreshing to see. I also love the vinyl gloves and how the color feels very sterile. Some people were like, “nursing is not a costume” and lmao, if y’all don’t stfu.
Adele dressed up as a brunette. Kidding! She dressed up as Morticia Addams, which we love to see, but you know, it’s a very vague Morticia. At the same time, I understand that Adele was performing and had to sing for hours, so I’m sure she doing too much wouldn’t have been ideal. ALSO, this dress is custom Arturo Obegero, so like, it’s an automatic win for me. There’s also something very synergistic about dressing as Morticia and wearing Arturo’s work, because I find that there are often gothic touches in his pieces.
Billie Eilish and Devon Lee Carlson together on Halloween!! We love to see a united front. Anyway, Billie is dressed as Jane Fonda’s character from Cat Ballou and I think she did a great job! Everything looks pretty spot on, and I love a little Americana cowgirl. Devon is dressed as Elizabeth Hurley’s character from Bedazzled, and like I said, I do love a niche reference.
Rosalía as Björk from the 2001 Academy Awards is most pleasing to me. Naturally, as a costume it is a bit more flat than the original, but you know what it is immediately. I also like that you can tell she paid attention to the details of the look, like making sure that even the shoe was similar.
She a baddy she showin’ her panty! This feels very correct and on brand to me. Cute!
I love that they give us a brunette, blonde, and red head trio every single year. This year we got the iconic DC girlies, and I like that we went with more classic iterations, instead of the more modern ones we always see now. Very cute.
Lmao, what is with this family and Marilyn. Anyway, I guess I like that it isn’t the most obvious choice for a Marilyn costume.
I much preferred Kendall’s take on Wonder Woman. I think she did a great job with this one and the little video recreation was cute.
Kendall also dressed up with Kylie as Sugar & Spice, who are Two-Face’s henchmen from the DC comics. I’d say they did a pretty good job with these looks! After I saw this look, I felt like Kendall’s Marilyn costume was more of a, well I have the wig and a black turtleneck, so might as well!
Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum dressed up as Rosemary and her demon baby from Rosemary’s Baby, and this is so funny, I’m obsessed. Also what an engagement announcement!
I really just want to be a quarter as fabulous as Jordan Roth by the time I’m dead. He gave us a full Evil Queen experience in custom Zac Posen, AND his dress featured the seven circles of hell. Scrumptious.
Megan is always one of my favorites each year. First, she dressed up as a flower from Alice In Wonderland and it’s brilliant. She could have gone with an obvious choice, like the Queen of Hearts or Alice herself, but no! Honestly, I love the flowers and would love to see a spinoff on them. She killed it.
This Soul Eater costume made me lol. I mean, she also, obviously killed it. That second slide, PLEASE.
Finally she gave us a Greta from Gremlins experience, and I’m once again, obsessed. Great is a hottie for sure.
Halle dressed as Janet Jackson from Poetic Justice and I think this is cute! It’s easy, but it’s spot on, and Halle has always reminded me of Janet a little bit.
I won’t lie, I thought this was Vanessa Hudgens at first glance, but I think this is a good example of taking a reference and keeping it identifiable while making it make sense for you. Obviously the outfit is different, but it still has similar details with all the belts and bondage, and the scissor hands just being really long sharp nails is smart.

Sabrina Carpenter dressed up as Rapunzel, but honestly, it just looks like she’s dressed as Sabrina Carpenter.
Quen really killed it with all of her Halloween looks this year, but the standout had to be this Grace Jones, Jean-Paul Goude photo shoot. This was actually Grace’s pregnancy shoot, and Jean-Paul was the baby daddy, so, fun!
Winnie Harlow as Kat Williams is so fucking funny. I feel like she goes for it every year, and I appreciate that.
However I loved her take on Glenn Close’s Cruella, especially because it’s not one we see referenced often, and it’s so incredibly camp and delicious. Winnie also talked about how because of her vitiligo, a lot of kids would call her names, one of which was ‘dalmation’, so this was her reclaiming that for her younger self.
I love that not only do Ariana and Liz dress up together each year, but they also film fill scenes from the movies they’re referencing. These Showgirls looks are incredible, and also are a great distraction from Ariana’s home wrecking mess, oop-
Ed Sheeran said, red haired icons only!! Someone in the comments said, “Why didn’t you dress up this year?” Y’all are fucked up lmao. There will be no Ed Sheeran slander here, not on my watch!
I can’t believe Mariah hadn’t dressed up as Jessica Rabbit sooner. Yeah, this makes sense. I do wish that the dress was a bit more snatched though, because you know, it’s Jessica Rabbit, and she would not stand for that puckering.
Renee Rapp dressed up as Pamela Anderson and I’m giggling and kicking my feet, that is all.
However she also dressed up as Justin Bieber and sand ‘One Less Lonely Girl’ to Lola Tung. This is so unserious and I love her for it. Also, allegedly, when I was younger I bought a pair of Supras because Justin Bieber wore them, but there is no proof of that.
Chrishell and G Flip as Ross Lynch and Troye Sivan from the ‘One Of Your Girls’ music video made me spit on my phone. I mean, this is very good.
Lil Nas X as Little Richard is very cute and good, but also…
He dressed as a bloody tampon, and, LOL.
Larson Thompson as Carrie Bradshaw at her wedding is brilliant. Again, love a niche reference. Obviously Carrie isn’t niche, but honing in on a very specific moment is always fun to me.
Janelle Monáe does not get the credit and attention she deserves on Halloween— she always goes for it and is always one of my favorites! This is very good and very terrifying, I love it.
Chlöe Bailey as Mrs. Incredible… I mean, yeah, duh. This literally couldn’t possibly make any more sense.
Finally we have the queen of Halloween herself, Heidi Klum. This year Heidi went as a peacock, and while this might not be the most insane Heidi costume, I do think it’s one of the more creative in terms of execution. She had Cirque du Soleil performers creating her feathers, and it makes the costume feel like a whole performance. Also, her husband dressed as an egg. She’s Barbie, and he really is just Ken.
So that was Halloween! Who were your favorites?
TTYL!!!
