2022 Oscar's Vanity Fair After Party Fashion Review
Why Were These Looks Better Than The Actual Oscars Fashion?
I was considering skipping this and just including some of the looks in our weekly fashion roundup, but then I just kept adding more and more, and realized it would all be too much. So that’s why you’re receiving it a little bit later.
It’s interesting to see that not only was the invite list at the after party more interesting, but so was the fashion.
Also, I’m thinking of doing a Bridgerton fashion review; what do we think? The fashion in that show stresses me out, so could be a fun time!
The minute I saw this collection, these looks had my full attention. I was hoping to see them at the Grammy’s, but the Vanity Fair After Party said, don’t worry babe, I got you. I mean, this is fantastic. The wire boning to make those twists is incredible, and I love this huge plunging neckline. I also appreciate the nips out moment; adding a pasty or pad would have ruined it for me.
AMAZING. Olivier Theyskens past two collections have consisted of 26, one of a kind looks, made from deadstock fabrics. Given the fact that Anok is wearing one here, I wonder if it’s hers for keeps. Either way this is absolutely beautiful; the patchwork of all the fabrics is really lovely, and she just looks beautiful.
Dior is really lucky to have Anya as a brand ambassador, because her being a beautiful little gazelle is the best part of this look. I mean, overall, this isn’t the absolute worst Dior look that could have been chosen, but it’s still not that interesting. This little netted face covering, though, is superb; give me more drama!!!
There’s a lot of good elements here, but together they are too much. I think if we’d focused on one or two things, this dress would have been a lot more polished and a lot more flattering, because right now it’s not doing much for Fendi. These fabric panels on the side aren’t too great, and I know it’s difficult to avoid due to the dress being silk, but it’s wrinkly.
I love Simone Rocha for Billie. I prefer this little babydoll over her Oscars Gucci dress; they both have that signature Billie silhouette that makes her body a mystery, but the Simone Rocha isn’t eating her up. My one complaint is the necklace; nope those are not straps. That choice just really takes away from the sweet strapless moment.
Di Petsa is known for their “wet look”, but it’s typically done in a white fabric. Here this beautiful rich, metallic, wine color is used instead, and I think it’s nice to see their most popular technique used in a different way. This is from their ‘Mother Persephone’ collection, so this color just reminds me of pomegranates; can’t confirm if that’s where the inspiration came from, but I’m going with it.
This isn’t anything groundbreaking, but I think it first her well, and the embroidered houndstooth is lovely. I like the pink and green together, and I think the colors compliment her really well, however the black straps feel unnecessary. I think it would have been a lot better without that element; it just takes away from the SNACHDT waist.
ABSOLUTELY! This was one of the best looks from the Gucci Love Parade collection, and every time I look at this photo I just smile. The 1940s glamour and mix of textures is so delicious. Although the dress is a lot busier on the bottom, it does a great job of slowly going from light to heavy. The sequins, the feathers, the light dusting of purple on the bottom; it just all works so well together. The dress fits her beautifully and the waist line is shaped perfectly.
I think this color is sweet and the wrapping of the jacket is quite lovely, but I’d really like to understand why we couldn’t get a tailor; the pants are far too long. I understand that you can’t always make adjustments when pulling a look, but honestly, just don’t wear it?! The floral shirt underneath is fine, but I’m not crazy about the white tee underneath.
Demi really brought it this night. First we had the custom Miu Miu at the Oscars and then this Paco?! I know we don’t all love a peplum, I don’t even really love a peplum, but here I think it’s fun. I think the pie frill collar is cute and ties in with the ruffling and gathering of the rest of the dress. Whoever is styling her also does a great job of keeping her looks from aging her.
You already know I love a buttery yellow. Other than this fantastic color, I also just think the suit is pretty great. It’s a really nice take on casual suiting. The loose fit here works well, and it’s honestly one of my favorite menswear looks of the night. The shoes however, we’re choosing not to see those.
Is part of the reason why this looks so good because Elsa Hosk is wearing it? Yes, but it’s also not a bad look! It’s nothing crazy, but it’s a fun time. Cutouts are not going anywhere anytime soon, so as long as we’re continuing to keep it fresh, I’m not mad at it.
What’s happening here? What was the idea? What was the goal? I’m not understanding this not really a corset, corset moment, with a sheer piece of fabric holding it together in the center. Also not sure why we thought pairing this with a black high waisted maxi skirt was the move.
This is so sweet! I think the off-the-shoulder bow moment is cute, and the subtle mermaid tail is fun. This a great take on a classic black and white look and the fit is great.
I don’t love the flower in the middle, but I also don’t hate it? I just think this look is very different form what we usually see from Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, I do think it’s an interesting look, it’s just not my favorite. It’s really the Elsa Peretti bangles for me.
I mean she wore Dolce & Gabbana, looking like this is what she gets.
I mean there’s really no one that wears Rick Owens better than Hunter. It’s given elf but make it high fashion, and I’m here for it. This denim is really fantastic, and I love the lighter parts that look sandblasted. The bateau neckline and mermaid moment are great, and I’m really here for this look.
Jake looks boring, we’re not here to talk about him. Jeanne on the other hand looks fantastic. This gold plated dress is fantastic and if you look closely she’s also wearing the rose heels, so we love.
This is one of the less offensive looks from Christian Siriano, but it’s still pretty offensive. There’s something about the three buttons in the center that doesn’t feel right for me. I do, however, love Janelle’s commitment to always wear black and white.
Jessica really went two for two with these Gucci dresses. The purple one was far more interesting, but it was so fantastic that I can let this one slide. Either way, this green color looks beautiful on her, and the wrapped, accordion pleated is lovely.
Overall, is this anything crazy? No. But the halter choker (literally) is insane. The dress itself isn’t that groundbreaking, but I do really love the hand around her neck. I know some people find it triggering, but I think it’s fun and interesting. Also, were the red eyes a part of the look, I need to know.
While I don’t think this look is super exciting, and I think there were better looks from this collections, it’s still interesting. I like how it looks like she’s standing between panels of fabric, and I think the intentional wrinkle of the fabric works with all the ruffles. This is something different than what we usually see Kendall in, so I’ll give it to her.
Kim is wearing Balenciaga as well, and this is the finale look of the last collection. I think the color is fantastic; it’s a nice look, and it definitely aligns with Kim’s fashion choices as of late, however it doesn’t fit. You can see bunching at the waist, and that should not be happening, especially with a fabric like this one. I also wish she’d kept the glasses on the whole time, because they made the look better.
This is a good simple look! He gave us the cute, blue Bottega moment at the Oscars, and then a sleek, black Bottega moment for the after party. Just like the first look, I think the pants could be a tad shorter, but overall I enjoy it. I like that the weaving on top of the shoes ties in the weaving of the sweater, and I really like this leather clasp on the jacket; I wonder if there’s a way it comes together.
Kourtney looks like an absolute, damn mess. There is literally nothing good about this look. I said it once, and I’ll say it again, that’s what you get for wearing Dolce & Gabbana. This nude fabric underneath is terrible and the sequin/lace trim looks like someone hot glued it on. Problematic behavior and hot garbage dresses aside, Dolce no longer has a distinguishable look. The only cohesive element of their dresses lately is that they all look bad and/or boring. Travis on the other hand looks great! You all know we stan Thom Browne, and that coat is lovely. The pants fit well and the white shirt underneath is fine.
Kristen wore Chanel, again, of course. To no one’s surprise, it’s still not great. While the last couture collection wasn’t the best, there were definitely some better looks we could have chosen from. This look is just uninspired and that bow in the center feels unnecessary. I will forever feel unfulfilled from not getting a Princess Diana moment from her.
I love this large, luxurious fur coat. I’m going to assume it’s from the most recent collection. The pants could fit a little bit better, but that extremely pointed boot is great.
While I wasn’t crazy about the last Off-White collection, this is definitely one of the looks that sparked my interest. I really enjoy this almost, optical illusion the polkadots give off as they drape around the body. I wish a little more of that had been carried into the bust area, but overall it’s quite fun.
This is not great, and it’s quite boring. Just like with Barbie, I feel like we’re trying to put too many things together, and there were also just far better Fendi Couture pieces to choose from. I also kind of wish she’d just continued the Versace vibe from her Oscars look; I’m sure there would have been no problem getting two looks.
This dress is trying really hard to hide the fact that it’s boring, with this large embellishment on the bust, but it’s not working. It’s a really good thing her dad wasn’t there, because I know his look would have ate her up!
Maggie really came through with two custom Schiaparelli looks in one night; I respect it. This one is especially fantastic, because it references Elsa’s shattered glass evening jacket from 1939. This is a really lovely, simple look, and the way the waist scoops in at the front is incredible.
I’m just not going to sit here and believe that Mônot couldn’t have given Meg a more interesting look; did you see what Elsa was wearing?! This is just not the hot girl fantasy I want for her. She deserves more!
While this is from the same collection as Jada’s green, Oscars look, it’s far less interesting. There’s nothing groundbreaking about the black tulle over corset and shorts, but I do appreciate the JPG boudoir references, so, fine.
Honestly, I think this is a fun look! This white, sequin, robe dress feels very glamorous, and I like the feather trim. The pink silk underneath is cute and I like that it matches the shoe.
It is very rare that I like or care about what Rita Ora is wearing, but she really came out here and did it with this one! This gorgeous sequin landscape on the train of the cape is inspired my traditional Minhwa folk art and the term directly translates to “painting of the people.” I think tis look is really beautiful, and even the simple, black column dress is quite lovely.
Sarah Paulson is wearing Bottega Veneta and we love to see it! I like that Sarah always goes for it and I feel like she really does appreciate fashion. I’ll be honest, this skirt looks a lot better when it’s actually in motion; stillness kind of takes away from the magic of it. It’s not the best Bottega look, but I’m still happy to see it.
You already know I’m going to say that I wish he was wearing something more interesting. With that being said, I do think the subtle, floral embroidery on the jacket is quite sweet. If you’re going to do a plain, all black suit, a little fun touch, and good tailoring is the least I ask for. This man needs to get better shoes though.
This little Versace mini is fantastic. The fit is incredible and I love the the pointed neckline. It’s simply beautiful.
I have no clue who this woman is, but I need to figure it out immediately, because this dress is incredible. The color is so striking, and these large sequins are beautiful. I’m obsessed with this bell shaped skirt; the structure is amazing. I think it also fits really well at the breast and torso. I’m sure you can guess that I’m not crazy about the belt, but for Prada’s sake, I’ll forgive it.
I think Joe’s suit is really great; this sequin embroidery creates an outline of a body and it’s really brilliant. The little diamond choker is also a fun touch. Sophie is wearing a custom look, and I really enjoy how the dress plays into the fact that she’s pregnant. I think the waist line of the dress draws your eyes to the belly, and its a lovely dress.
Definitely not the best custom Miu Miu look I’ve ever seen; not even close, actually. I just don’t think the laced top and silk skirt come together in a synergistic way. The side of the dress was also slitted and held together by pins; lets leave that to Versace. Yeah, it’s just not great, and too long.
This is a really fantastic short suit. I love the large collar/lapel/hood, and if you look closely at the jacket you can see that this is a play on toile fabric. Toile, also known as muslin, is the fabric designers use to create a garment, before the actual fabric is used; a rough draft if you will. It’s intriguing to see this “cheap” fabric being taken and used to create an haute couture piece.
I know you all went feral over the shirtless, jacket moment, but this look ate that one up! I think this spliced together denim and leather set is really great and fits him better than the Oscars look. I really enjoy it, and the boot compliments the look well, although I feel like it could be a bit chunkier.
I wasn’t really blown away by this at first, but I actually do quite like it. I think this full leather, mermaid gown moment is interesting. It’s simple, but still a little bit fun, and it’s tailored well.
This is not doing it for me at all. It’s boring and I expect more. You’re probably like, “But Caroline, she wore a simple, black, sequin dress to the Oscars and you said that was good. Why is this bad?” Well, that first look was Michael Kors, and simple sequin dress is very Michael Kors. Who am I to judge Michael Kors for doing what is exactly expected of Michael Kors?! This is Valentino however, therefore I am expecting far more.
I couldn’t find who Venus is wearing here, but I actually quite enjoy it; I don’t even mind the slit! I do the right underneath the breast could be a little cleaner, but other than that I’m into it. I think this sheared peplum is fun, and I think there’s a sporty element to it, which like, tennis!!!
I loved this look when I saw it on the runway, and I love it even more now. Zendaya looks absolutely incredible. This is tailored to perfection and that wasp waist is insane. I think the color of the shirt underneath is really lovely, and I’m just obsessed.
This isn’t that interesting, which I don’t think you need me to tell you. The back is cut very low and gives a little bumster moment, but I’m still not that impressed. It does remind be a little bit of the iconic black dress from Le Grand Blond avec une Chaussure Noire.
So what’d you think? More fun than the Oscars right? Best dressed for me goes to Dakota Johnson, Hunter Schafer, and Maggie Gyllenhaal; honorable mention to Donald Glover. Worst is definitely Kourtney Kardashian, Kristen Stewart, and Emily Ratjkowski. Let me know what you thought in the comments! Also, literally, please, do NOT be shy, and share my posts<3
